"but he was always strutting around in that goofy purple leotard"
This coming from someone who has Wolverine as there avatar? Someone who wears yellow spandex and blue underwear...

Ha! I actually don't know much about the character, but you seem like you dig him a lot. If he meets your approval, then I must have done something right!

Little known fact about the Phantom, he was originally grey and stated as such in the comic strip for 20 years until he was officially changed to purple, against the creators wishes. Also his colour differs from country to country, where he appears blue, red, green and brown are around the world. As far as your design goes, I like it, but it seems a little medieval for a modern Phantom as each one updates their weapons and costume material over time. For a great historical and cultural rendition of the Phantom check this out:

Good work though, would like to see a more detailed version in colour.

You know, I read about the gray color in Wikipedia! That's really interesting. The four-color process was much less reliable in those days, especially on newsprint. Really, all it takes is a little bit too much Magenta in the mix to turn gray into purple. Check out Batman's gray tone in those early comics, it was all over the place.
I think the midieval look has a lot to do with the helmet. I shaped it that way to resemble his cowl, so he would still basically look like the classic character from the neck up. Also, I kinda did want to add some historical elements to his look, like maybe some of that gear actually came from 1536. That's just a personal love of history, though. I can definitely see your argument for a less archaic look.

Yeah there is no real explanation for the colouring. Basically the colouring artist got it wrong and never changed it despite the comic itself contradicting it. I believe the blue colour in places like Norway and Sweden was because they couldn't get the purple right, or it could have been a preference as Brazil had him in red.
There are stories about the earlier Phantoms and they tended to wear a cape, high top boots and a hat with a feather. Instead of the dual pistols he would have one flintlock and a sword, making for some good old fashioned pirate swashbuckling action.

Is the head supposed to be a cowl or a helmet? If it's a helmet, then I dig, but I don't know if I'm a fan of the cowl that's unattached to the rest of the stuff. I do like the overall feel though. Very cool, and very deserving of the character to be given a more badass feel.

Nah, it's a helmet. I'm thinking maybe it's a relic from the original Phantom from 1536. It's supposed to look kinda like Magneto's helmet from the X-men movie, so that it fits tightly to the head.
