The chalkier one are actually that way because I drew directly onto the screen with pastels and used matte medium to push it through. After, I made very slight touch ups onto the print with pastels. You only get one or two really clear prints from the process, but it's easy and a LOT faster than waiting on screen filler or photo emulsion to dry.

Interesting. I've never seen or heard of doing a screen print that way. So it kind of becomes more like a monotype in terms of printing multiples?

Exactly! Like a monotype made with a screen rather than a press. A professor taught me this method.

It's very interesting. Now, do you print with ink? The pastel is just used to block out the holes in the screen, right? Or do I have this mixed up?

GarbageLicker In reply to Brokenopenseed [2011-01-28 20:43:15 +0000 UTC]

No ink at all with this method. The matte medium or modge podge pushes the pastels through. If you draw on too thick, the pastels will clog it, though. Can block some areas out of the screen with a litho pencil if you want, though.

I actually drew onto the screen with pastels and used a line of matte medium at the top to squeegee it all through. There were some light touch ups after word with pastel, also.

ooooh cool, I've never done that. . . I've only got 1 screen so you can imagine my reluctance to experiment w/it XD

I was borrowing only one screen at the time. You can make a cheap screen with some scraps of wood and stretch something like organza over it. It's actually pretty good for getting a clean, smooth print and it's a LOT cheaper than buying nylon meshes or something.

Wonderful. I love the texture, it really has a pastel feel. What was the paper choice? I like the addition of chalk.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GarbageLicker In reply to roren001 [2009-08-12 12:36:06 +0000 UTC]

Not sure of the brand or anything, but it was a type of print-making paper my teacher supplied. And the print was done by drawing on top of the screen with chalk pastel, putting my paper under, and squeegeeing over the screen with modge podge.

You definitely should! I sort of got addicted to this type of screen printing. Quicker than most techniques and very fun.
