Description Spring is here and that means the birds are returning. Mostly grackles and sparrows, but I know that woodpeckers favor the trees behind our house as well. Haven't seen any this season, but I've heard them. So I thought that for a warm-up sketch I'd draw a happy woodpecker having just found a nice hollow to relax in. There are a couple of nice hollows in the trees in our back yard, though they seem to be mainly fought over by the local squirrels. I once saw a duck checking one of them out, but I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Sadly, haven't seen or heard too many of them this season. Just the usual sparrows, robins and chipmunks. Oh, and a rather high number of catbirds.

Wow, catbirds!

I have lived in New York for several years and I STILL haven't seen a bluebird, which is the state bird, BTW.

Blue jays I've seen but there haven't been many in my neighborhood this season. I think I've seen a bluebird around here, but I don't know their call so I can't be sure. I don't know if the lack of blue jays is why the catbirds are so prevalent this time around. Seen plenty of cardinals and robins. Then there's the mysterious thing that makes a large splashing sound in the river nearly every night. It's either a humongous fish or some beaver giving a warning slap to everything else.

Oh, and bunny rabbits. They seem to be okay with conditions at the moment.
