Description Using the previous set of free-handed drawings I submitted as a reference, I took about twelve hours yesterday to revisit my U.S.S. Farrington (NX-2010) redesign project with the resolve of finally completing the work I started back in June 2009.

This is the final version of a sheet that I've scanned and submitted to Deviant Art twice before. Besides the top and side views, I've also submitted an aft view of the experimental Federation battle cruiser, and drawn in close-ups of some of her details, namely the conning tower superstructure on her upper saucer section and one of the many external environmental sensor palettes that line the outside of her duranium/ceramic hull.

The sensor plates are something new that I first came up with when doing those free-handed dorsal, ventral and aft views. They were inspired by similar details that could be found on the Intrepid and Nova class starships from "Star Trek: Voyager." The idea is that the Farrington, being a wormhole drive testbed, was developed to travel through some of the harshest, most bizarre conditions a space flight vessel could be forced to experience.

These powerful, specialized sensor banks were therefore installed in strategic places all over the ship's hull to allow her crew to continuously monitor the situation outside the ship in case an emergency were to happen. Outside of wormhole travel, these sensors can also scan just like the ship's main sensor banks, but are much more powerful and discerning. They also can be used to assist weapon targeting and have limited utility for electronic counter-countermeasures, giving the Farrington the 2nd most powerful sensor capability among the Four Sisters.

The ship's bridge superstructure is unique, and upon close examination is very different from the "canon" Excelsior's bridge structure. It has a lot more in keeping with Ryan Church's 2009 U.S.S. Enterprise (NCC-1701) design, while at the same time keeping a number of the most important elements of the original Excelsior's conning tower, such as the long main body, circular impulse deflection crystal and upraised radiator fin (the original Excelsior had 2 fins and they were placed further back, to either side of the crystal).

Finally, many of the scaling issues I experienced when drawing the front view of the "Lady in White" (and would experience again when I attempted to follow this piece up with a finalized top-down plan view) were fixed with the back view. The proportions of the ship's parts in that drawing are much more accurate to what they should be. However, I now suspect that I may have drawn the "deck house" that contains her primary shuttle craft deck to be too narrow.

As before, the ship's actual statistics haven't changed from what I proposed three years ago. Some more of these statistics have been written onto this drawing - it was more convenient than me having to repeat them all in my notes.

Thanks! I was taking a bit of a risk, first with doing a J.J. Abrams style Excelsior and then putting a wormhole "ring" on her, so I'm glad you like the design. I've had time to think about it, if you look through my gallery you'll see I've been working on the design on-and-off since 2009.

I wish I could have one too, but I wonder where I'd park her. Remember, she's 1,140 meters from bow to stern - the size of a Venator class Star Destroyer from "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" - that's 71% of a mile long!
