I had my own idea for how they could be Shinigamis, but it was with Ichigo's help instead of Rukia's.

Some new villain (hadn't put much thought into what the villain's like) kidnaps Karin and Yuzu to lure Ichigo into a trap and hides behind them as human shields, figuring Ichigo would never attack as long as his beloved sisters were in the way. But, unfortunately for the villain, Ichigo remembered how he became a Shinigami (Rukia stabbing him) and flash-stepped to stab both Karin and Yuzu (made easier by the fact that he now has two swords) in order to transform them into Shinigamis. The three of them then beat the crap out of the villain.

Were I able to make a reboot, these two would be the main characters, but their powers wouldn't be Shinigami related. There actually wouldn't be Shinigami: it'd be somewhat different.
