I have seen so many Pony crossover art with these weird thigh things that act as grappling hooks. Do you mind explaining what the crossover is with and what it is about?

Ah, it's a crossover with a popular anime called Attack On Titan (or Shingeki no Kyojin in japanese). It's basically about a world where people fight giants that eat humans, called titans. The equipment is called 3D manoeuvre gear which is used in the anime to fight these titans, as their only weak spot is the nape of their necks. Like, the grappling hooks are used to fly around and get up high.
It's quite a popular anime and I think being a pretty 'geek' related fandom, the brony fandom shares a lot of fans with the anime fandom. Hence the popularity of some of these crossovers. I hope this clears things up for you ^_^
