okay so I sort of had this headcanon where Basil’s father is this guy. anamericantail.wikia.com/wiki/… Don't ask why because I have no idea maybe it's because I always thought they looked like when I was younger. I mean they do have similar markings and coloration. on top of that Mr. Grasping has a slight British twang to his voice. my headcanon was Mr. Grasping was Basil's father and his home was in England with Basil’s sister and mother. A common practice that happened back then during The immigration to Ellis Island during the 1800s was businessmen coming over to set up a second Factory. it happened quite often due to the fact that workers were pretty cheap over there and proper labor laws hadn't been put in place yet. my headcanon Is that Mr. Grasping was one of these businessmen. another piece of evidence for this will be the fact that Basil seems very well educated. and education was a hard thing to come by back then unless you were rich. most children were forced to work in order to keep their families fed. Perhaps this is where Basil met ratigan through his education? I do imagine though that Basil would have a very strained relationship with his father mainly because mr. grasping was the main antagonist of one of the sequels of An American Tail. The whole premise of his character was that he could get away with whatever he wanted because he was rich and I can imagine that would rub Basil the wrong way. so yeah my headcanon is that Basil's father is Mr. Grasping from An American Tail.
In the movie he plays in tanya is about nine so i suppose basil is around 13 during the events of An American Tail: The Treasure of Manhattan Island making him 25 in his movie and tanya 21. in my headcanon the meet a few months later while both happen to be in new york. Tanya delivering a violin made by her father and Basil just visiting with Dawson. she would visit him in London a year later and fall in love with him. becoming his wife soon after.
