Looks like a crane fly, not a mosquito. In their adult form they have no mouth parts and therefore cannot bite.

I'm not an entomologist either, but I do teach college biology and taxonomy is my specialty. Believe me, crane flies are very commonly misidentified as "giant" mosquitoes. Some people also call them mosquito hawks, in the mistaken belief that they eat mosquitoes. It's hard to eat them when you have no mouth parts. They only feed as larvae, little grubs that live in leaf litter.

And once they've grown up, they don't eat anymore? Until they die?

Yep. They mate and die within a few days. What a life, huh?

They spend a significant part of their life mating... what a life!

Well, a significant part of their adult life of a few days anyway.
