when you start pieces like this do you start by making a type of skeleton and building off of that, or are you just too badass for that?

For pencil, I use a blue pencil for sketching. How far I go with the sketching, depends on my mood. But I always do some sort of light gesture stick-figure to determine the flow of the body.

No reference was used.
Watching people (whether in life, movies, photo, etc.) helped me understand and memorize how the human body (and clothes, etc.) looks at different angles and such. I hope that helps, even just a little
