Description EDIT: Thanks a bunch for the feedback everyone. I beefed up his hair slightly and made his neck visible, and also tried curling his left index finger over the cloth wiping away the bloodstains. Oh yeah there's a moon now, and the tree on the left has more detailed texture.

I prefer the younger Kenshin over his older self. He's cooler and has better fashion sense. This scene is supposed to depict him cleaning up after a skirmish during the Meiji restoration, inspired by a great drawing done by Sweetmoon.

Decided to actually take the effort to draw a background. This was an experiment with a new coloring style - namely, slapping down base colors without really using lineart so as to have a better feeling of atmosphere. That probably doesn't make much sense.

Anyway it's dark, emo, and probably could use some form of 'rain' effect in Photoshop... I'll think about it.

I'm currently very dissatisfied with his left hand in particular - any clear tips on how to fix that would be greatly appreciated.

No problem, comments are appreciated anytime! Glad to see you liked it though it's not nearly as good as my stuff from the past... just curious, which ones do you think are my "best" anyway? Personally I liked this one, perhaps because there was a background, but this sort of thing is subjective...

I think backgrounds are what really make a wonderful picture. I've been looking at my stuff too and I noticed that I don't like it as much but people who do backgrounds I LOVE LoL. So I'm starting to work on backgrounds. Hmm... As for my favorite ones from your gallery >.< I'd have to check it all out ^_^ Take care hun Lol

oh wow that's really amazing, it really brings back memories of watching the Samurai X series yay Batousai the man-slayer!! haha I probably didn't spell that right, I'm very jealous of your skillz!! darn you!! But I really like the way it was done! It looks kinda like watercolors and I do like the way the background is done, particularly the sky

Watercolors, huh? I've always been trying to digitally simulate that effect but so far I haven't been really pleased with the results yet. Glad to see my work on the background paid off; I rarely ever do them but it's quite gratifying.

Thanks for the comment!

well you told me I should comment so I figured why not! But I think you did a farely good job with that picture of Sai I saw, it looked like some kind of paint and it's very beautifully done.

Thanks for the compliments! With Sai I was trying to create a different feeling from the other fanart of him I saw on dA, and I like to think I succeeded at that.

I think you did, you really are a good artist makes me uber jealous...especially considering I can't use photoshop to save my life

Funnytoss In reply to MrsUchihaItachi [2007-05-24 04:04:30 +0000 UTC]

Well it's not necessarily a 'Photoshop' thing - I actually learned to color digitally over the past year; before this I only used pencil and paper... granted, the equipment to color digitally certainly broadened by horizons considerably, but if I hadn't been drawing all the time before in the first place it probably never would have happened anyway.

MrsUchihaItachi In reply to Funnytoss [2007-05-27 08:57:57 +0000 UTC]

yeah I guess...but I'm still envious of you for it, because I know I would not have the patience to sit and draw something and then mess with it on photoshop especially considering I have no idea how to do it.

Funnytoss In reply to MrsUchihaItachi [2007-05-27 13:10:54 +0000 UTC]

Well there's not much I can say about patience ^^ but as far as messing around on Photoshop... when I first started out I spent a lot of time learning from great tutorials on dA. (I still do that now) Maybe on this piece I'd practice anatomy and proportions, then on the next one I'd practice eyes, then hair...

The color scheme, hair, and proportions are all great!
I know this isn't like, ultra detailed, but the fingers on the cloth seem slightly blurred.. Even though it's dark out, I think you still might be able to see a little finger joints. :'D
I loved the OVA.. poor Tomoe.. poor Kenshin! T_T

Wow, this is awesome. His head and neck do look a little odd... But other than that it looks great. I really like the dark tone of the picture, it seems to set the mood really well.

Funnytoss In reply to Sakurachan03 [2007-05-12 02:49:33 +0000 UTC]

Dark and gloomy~ the mood seems somewhat similar to the Kenshin OVA. I'm definitely planning on fixing the head, thanks for the input.

InuyashaServant [2007-05-11 05:57:01 +0000 UTC]

I loved Ken in the Rurouni Kenshin manga. Samurai X was more realistic, more serious. However he was cute in RK. He had a funny side where in SX he was all doom and gloom. xx'
Even so he is awesome in both.
Well done! I very much like the hair and right hand!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Funnytoss In reply to InuyashaServant [2007-05-11 11:51:02 +0000 UTC]

Huh. What's the difference between RK and Samurai X material-wise? I always figured that was simply the different name for the series in different regions...

Or are you referring to the young Kenshin OVA arc? (The more gloomy and emo one)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InuyashaServant In reply to Funnytoss [2007-05-11 13:54:48 +0000 UTC]

Same thing story-wise. That always confused me. How they animated the same story twice. o.O' Like.. why?
Nah I was just meaning the different styles of Ken, but yus. They completely changed his character with both X and RK. 'Tis weird.

Funnytoss In reply to InuyashaServant [2007-05-11 14:18:20 +0000 UTC]

Oh really? I've seen the American version so I wouldn't know... so did they re-draw everything or what?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

InuyashaServant In reply to Funnytoss [2007-05-11 14:27:56 +0000 UTC]

Same story but yeah. They re-did everything in a different style. Like the parts with Tomoe and Enishi(However you spell his name, her Tomoe's little brother). My guess is that they did it in such a different style because it's more serious than Rurouni Kenshin was. You stopped the series when Kenshin and Kaoru were at the beach? oo That was where the RK anime left off.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Funnytoss In reply to InuyashaServant [2007-05-12 02:48:39 +0000 UTC]

Well I've read the manga and the (Japanese) anime series, which ends with these story arc where Kenshin goes temporarily blind. Then there's the OVA which has a different art style and what not. I remember they released the Enishi story arc for the anime as well, but I haven't seen that yet - it wasn't out when I was still watching the series.

IceRune [2007-05-11 05:32:47 +0000 UTC]

Left hand actually looks really good. I would work on the neck. >.>

Again, the head looks a bit taped on. Maybe make the chin extrude over the neck cloth to show that he's wearing clothing, not standing behind it. X3

Very nice otherwise.. And yes, young Kenshin is a badass. Although older Kenshin has his moments where he goes all awesome.

Kenshin, if you couldn't tell, is one of my favorite series. =3

One last mistake might be that the hair in the back isn't big enough. Think bishi.

Funnytoss In reply to IceRune [2007-05-12 03:14:44 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure if I follow the observation regarding the hair?

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

IceRune In reply to IceRune [2007-05-11 05:33:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh wait, one thing you coudl do on teh left hand is make the tops of the fingers angle in so it looks like he's curlign his fingers around the cloth cleaning his sword.

But don't do it with the middle finger, it wouldn't work, just extend that one out fully, the other two go ahead and curl around.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Funnytoss In reply to IceRune [2007-05-11 11:49:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks SO much for the suggestions, I'll definitely try them out. And yes, his neck is really screwed up. That's what happens when I draw without first doing a 'skeleton'... proportions turn to whack.

Hehe, his head does look kind of Photoshopped on, eh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IceRune In reply to Funnytoss [2007-05-12 07:37:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah lol. X3

What I meant about the hair was that it's not long enough. Think big and flowing and crazy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Funnytoss In reply to IceRune [2007-05-12 12:39:12 +0000 UTC]

Ah... then again given that he's not moving the hair probably should just flow naturally down. I did make it somewhat thicker in my edit though.

I think I'll see if I can get my hands on the original manga for the young Kenshin arc - generally I base my stuff off of manga more than anime.
