I look to the artists of the 50s.  Saturday Evening Post, Colliers magazine.  Arists
like JC Leyendecker, Dean Cornwell, norman Rockwell, Illya Repin the list goes on.
In order to understand their works and design choices I focused and still focus on the basics.

If you have a strong knowledge of basics, you can figure out/learn design sensibilities.
