I did almost all of the body painting in photoshop, then i touched the seams up with deeppaint3d - then most of the hair was done in deeppaint

so, what do you do, create a light map that looks like a black and white version of the box in the bottom left of this image, then port it over into photoshop and paint on top of that? it seems like that would be kind of difficult because of how funky weird that bottom left image is.

yep, that's it . I just took a UV snapshot that shows where your texture will be wrapped onto the model and then its just exporting the texture a lot and testing it in the 3d program. I export the texture after every major change, but once you get used to the layout you can pretty easily tell where everything is going to be.

There are tricks to make it easier that I didn't use this time cuz I wanted to see what I could do with just pure photoshop painting.
1. you can bake a light or AO map as you said - maybe with lighting from above and get a good read of the curvature of each part
2. I prefer the tools in photoshop, but you can use a 3d paint program like deeppaint, 3dcoat, mudbox, or the built-in functions of maya,max, or photoshop.
