2. whether it's cracked or plain snapped
Ever seen someone who had a broken nose?
Well, the question already implies it. You can SEE who has had one because it doesn't heal properly. The majority of bones, even with proper modern medical attention, cannot heal properly.
Anyone who had a broken bone has constant pain in that area and sometimes sustained other damage as well.
Smaller bones can heal properly even without proper medical attention, though it's rare they do without and end up being deformed which could have been avoided. But the majority of bones don't - especially if at ANY point in the injury/healing process, that bone got displaced.
The human body is comparably fragile. We can sustain minor injuries, but quite a deal of injuries in general leave permanent damage. Broken bones belong to those. Guess what pirates did to crewmates who had a broken leg? Chopped it off. If he survived (read: if it by some miracle didn't get infected), he'd get a wooden leg. Why? Because otherwise it wouldn't heal properly and he'd be useless to the crew. Rather have a light than a medium impediment, basically.
