Description For my October art jam - draw a scene from an NES game, including background. I usually suck at backgrounds, so I spent a bit of time on this one.

The scene is one of the terrors from my first try at The Legend of Zelda back when I was a kid... Link being snatched away by a Wallmaster, just before the fight with the first boss.

Love the angle, love the frame, love the style.

Great work! (color would be nice, but if you say you aren't good then alright.)

I despise those things. It's so satisfying to slash them when they miss. But then they respawn. T_T

In the original I don't think they respawn indefinitely. You can definitely kill them all off and leave a nice, empty room.

Bit like the Leevers.

Who never got caught by those damn things? That happened to me the first time I played the orriginal NES Zelda also.

Great picture, nice detailing and background to.

Thanks I rarely draw backgrounds, which is why I set myself the challenge! Good fun, so long as you have a good idea.

Shweeeeeeeet!! Love the angles and stuff on this piece. You should colour it all like the old concept art-stuff like, tooo~!

When the idea popped into my head I was attempting to draw Link in his NES style anyway - unfortunately there were three different styles, not including the enemy drawings, which makes four.

I'd like to colour it, but I suck at colouring, so I might skip it

AngelCrusher In reply to fryguy64 [2007-10-11 09:34:31 +0000 UTC]

nah. I tried to get into it on the gameboy, and was just bored by it all. I was kinda put off since. I saw friends play zelda on the N64, and I didnt see the attraction, it still seemed boring. But then Nintendo do is release another zelda game every year near enough. I dont even understand why its called zelda. I know its the princesses name, but what? She gets captured every time? Nintendo and their fanboys go on about how revolutionary and creative nintendo are, but their two main characters revolve around the main story about the hero saving the princess...in every game for about 20+ years? Then the fanboys have a go that the only good things on playstation and xbox are sequels and that they lack creativity and innovation that Nintendo has....but Nintendos good games are all sequels, or party based games with nintendo characters.

So it kinda starts with hating zelda, but more hating nintendo fanboys. ^_^

Well, you're speaking to king of the Nintendo fanboys now... although I agree with everything you say (except Zelda being boring).

I think the one thing everyone forgets is that Nintendo's a business. So they're going to keep making sequels and spinoffs so long as they're making money as well.

What I like about Nintendo is that most of their games remain good and keep innovating. Sometimes small things, sometimes entire games. Not to say other developers don't do the same. I mean... I'm in the business of being entertained, regardless of the developer

as long as you dont complain about other consoles relying on sequels, because to be fair, other consoles have better original titles than nintendo do, they just rely on their heavy hitters and try putting mario into every single game like golf, football, party games and do many sequels of those, and just delay on a real mario game.

If we saw Halo football, or halo party, people would cry its stupid and a sellout. Most of those cries from nintendo ironically. lol
You Nintyfanboys really are the worst

You're alright though man. But in general. I made a forum post giving my views on the wii, because i was disappointed by it. Then I talked about industry and how playstation helped gaming become mainstream. I must have had abotu 100-200 messages of hate from nintendo fanboys. lol

To be honest, nearly every game I own on the Wii is on the Virtual Console. The only one that's really impressed me is Zelda (funnily enough), which was really a dressed up Gamecube title. Everything else has been... uninspiring.

I shouldn't still be waiting for a piece of killer software a year in. I know game releases take time to get going, but there has been nothing at all! At least we have Metroid, Galaxy and Brawl coming soon... but where's the new, innovative games that we were promised?

I'm a realistic Nintendo fanboy, if that helps you categorize me.

heh, glad you see the reasoning man. see, the only games to look forward to on a Nintendo, is nintendo licensed characters, their main games, which dont show much innovation, just a different story, like everything else.

I salute you sir for being a good fanboy, and not an idiot.

I. Hate. Wallmasters.

They're utterly annoying and really make you scream out.

Your pic describes the feeling pretty well, Fry.

Holy crap! Awesome, fry, simply awesome!

Those hand enemies in the zelda games sure caused several traumas to people. Definitly, a great moment in the history of gaming. I didn't knew they appeared in the original LoZ.

Thanks dude

They appeared in a couple of the dungeons in LoZ, including the room before the first boss. They were terrifying when I was 8... and they're terrifying now I'm 24
