Description I have had a plan to redraw the very first deviations I ever submitted - desktop backgrounds featuring Nintendo heroes from the Famicom [link] and Disk System [link]

The idea was to maintain the original pose, redraw their full bodies individually, then combine them. With the skills I've gained over the years, plus adding in more of their original artwork looks (as I've been doing with the Nintendo All-Stars pieces), I'm hoping to have a really awesome final piece.

The second is Goku, the central figure in the original desktop. He's the monkey king from the Famicom Disk System game Yuuyuuki, and one of my favourite Nintendo characters due to his awesome design.

Was the game he's from the one that was conerted to Whomp-Em in the US release?

Not... to my knowledge...

There are a lot of characters (TV, film and videogame) linked to the Songokuu character from the Chinese fable Journey to the West though. It's possible that might be the reference.

He's got a much more youthful complexion to him than the one in your Disk System medley, and more agile. I like this one.

Indeed. Part of the idea is that he's the monkey king, so having a squad, inflexible version was out of the question. I also found better artwork of the original character to use as a source, so I could make him look more like he's supposed to.

Which came first, this Goku, or the one from DBZ? They bear striking similarities.

Monkey characteristics such as a tail, flying cloud, and their name...

Of course, they're both based on Songoku from the Monkey King stories... kinda beat them both by many years

I also think Capcom's Sonson might have them both beat

DBZ Goku, or "Son Goku". The Dragon Ball series started in 1984, while Yuu Yuu Ki was first released October 14, 1989.
