From what I've read, i.e "Reanimator" and "The Temple", very dark. He was also very racist.

As opposed to saying it was a sign of those times, it was more likely that Lovecraft had some serious mental issues about people he knew nothing about and hence, feared. It was more of a fear thing than a hate thing and when he eventually met individuals of any of the races he disliked, he usually found them quite charming and got along well. His fear of the unknown was articulated in his stories.
