This is freaking amazing--I'm doing a painting myself that's similar to yours actually, I'll post it soon as I'm finished, but being an african american girl, I can't help but love how our hair looks when in it's natural state (granted it is difficult at times to take care of, but it's worth it) I really really love this to pieces~!
I especially love the hair texture that you put into the painting--it really brings out the tight kinky twirls. And the color is magnificently vibrant and blend well together. And it's not blended shading either--it's kind of like cell shading. Did you work on this image while looking at a photo or did you freehand it completely? Also how long did it take you?

Because of the brush's texture it actually made painting her hair the easiest part (at a point I began to wonder if I had made an overly specialized brush that would only be good for for painting tight curls/curly afros).
And yes, I used a reference. It's in the caption at the bottom. I'd say it took me about 3-4 hours. I'm very indecisive when I work so I tend to draw/paint in circles sometimes. Plus, I was fine-tuning the brush a long the way. As far as the shading, I kind of wanted to keep it textured and not refined/blended. The only blending I did was on a few spots in the face and breast, but then I went over them with the brush again.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment and I'm glad you like it!

That's the great thing about brush textures--they give a unique style, and here you perfected it. And only 3-4 hours?! magnificent! Your indecisive personality causes you to make wonderful and original textures and patterns (as well as finished products)~
Thank you for responding with great information! I really appreciate it (I did actually learn a couple things from it--like learning how to experiment with brushes and using different texture patterns, so thank you for that too) ~
and your welcome~! I love your art, I look forward to seeing more!

This is stunning! I love the painterly lighting. And dat hair...
I hope you do some more experimenting with that brush set/technique. I like your usual technique of strong colors under hard lines, but it's cool seeing you do something way different from that as well.

Thanks! Glad you like it! I decided to divert from my usual method of sketching the face beforehand just so I wouldn't be hindered by the lines. It was actually a bit easier than I initially thought it would be.
Originally, when I was experimenting with the brush I was only using it for the hair, but I ended up really liking the texture and completing the entire painting with it. Needless to say, I think I'll be using it again. haha
