That's an awesome story!
It's really funny how that all turned out, almost like it was...fate.

Would you say they feel emotion? Particularly towards you or other owners? Or maybe anything similar to affection? I've heard many tales of snakes bitting and sometimes killing their owners and I'm just curious as I've no actual experience with snakes myself.

This is a very debatable subject and different people view this very differently. But for my answer yes, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind. My snakes recognize who I am and never shy away from me when I go to pick them up or pet them, but they do get a bit nervous towards people they are unfamiliar with, but never bite or anything like that. I also treat all animals with respect, regardless if they are my pet, someone else's, a stray, food, or if its animal I pursue myself as a hunter/trapper. I believe animals in general have an extra sense, I have seen animals that Ive never seen before shy away from people who I know are bad news but openly come to me.
The stories you hear about snakes (or other exotics) hurting or killing their owners are very biased, and against the animal. Like the snakes for example, when you buy a snake in the first place you have no clue where it came from. Usually is some backyard breeder somewhere who probably cuts ends to be cheaper and get more money. This animal has not been socialized, its not in its correct habitat, its scared, it feels threatened. But how could that possibly be the snakes fault? I've been hurt by animals in the past, and each and every time I knew that was nobody's fault but my own. (Unless the animal was in an abusive situation before, then you blame the owner). The snakes that killed or hurt people that were kept as pets had absolutely no say in their lives. So some to begin with are just mean and try to bite, out of terror, because they have no idea what the persons intentions will be good. (if they are good). They think that there trying to hurt and kill them, they've never learned otherwise. Animals also have there limits no matter how friendly they are. This happened to me several years ago when I had some friends over and we had one of my snakes out....for a pretty long time. And after a while she begin to get a bit grumpy by hissing faintly and trying to hide here face, ect. and I failed to see this and we continued to handle her and she bit me. Ive had this snake for seven years now, and has NEVER bitten me again. That was defiantly my fault haha. A lot of times is also because of lack of care and a proper encloser, that leads to a hungry snake getting loose. Its only instincts are to protect themselves from predators, hide, and find food. This is usually what leads to a snake killing someone. Sadly this doesn't end well for the snake. It doesn't even end there, because the media get to it and then snakes are oh so evil blah blah blah. Even thought you don't see people go to the store and be afraid to get killed by someone. Even thought its sooooooooo much more common then getting killed by an animal. But people go out into the woods and suddenly get scared there gonna get mauled by a bear or wolf. Its quite sad, people like to take things that they know nothing about and blame it on their problems. Or fear what is not a part of everyday life.
Agh sorry this got so long and maybe a bit off topic! I tried to explain the best that I could
