The pics I made after "Adam and Eve" were colored with some use of the Magic Wand and brushes; prior to that, I was using brushes and the eraser to remove any color that went outside their lines (a very pain in the butt process, and very time-consuming too, but it's still a very basic and sometimes a more practical way of coloring).
Using the Magic Wand tool cuts some time off the coloring process, but it's also a more complex way of coloring and adding texture.
Don't worry if you don't know how to use Photoshop that much - I'm still learning new things about it even though I had it for over two years. XD
The best way to learn how to use it is by lots of experimentation, reading magazines, and watching podcasts. The guide tends to be my last resort - it's like reading a dictionary in my opinion. XD

^^ Can you recommend some good books or magazines about using Photoshop?

I tend to read Photoshop Creative and Advanced Photoshop magazines.
As for books... I don't know any on top of my head. XD I have Adobe Photoshop CS one-on-one by Deke McClelland because my father bought it, but I don't read it much because I have Photoshop Elements, not CS. But I'm sure there's other good books out there - you just have to visit a bookstore or library and just look around.
