Description I tried my hand at using charcoal pencils for the first time by attempting to draw Heath Ledgers rendition of the Joker and boy, did that not go well. I'm a bit messy when it comes to drawing to begin with and it really shows here. It doesn't help that I haven't drawn anything in a while due to an overflowing work schedule. Oh well, it's all for the purpose of ultimate improvement.

Sorry, should be: tool called a stipple...

There's a toolcaaled a stipple, which is like a pencil made out of rolled paper. It's really helpful in charcoal drawing for blending.
Also, a kneaded rubber eraser is also essential. Using the eraser to remove charcoal from the lighter areas helps to make the darker areas more prominent.
You're on the right road. Do more charcoal drawings!

Thanks, I'll have to look into those a bit more. I was pretty unprepared for this one and my hands looked like I spent my vacation in a coal mine by the end of it.

Yeah, every time I think about doing charcoal, I remember the coal mine you allude to. I think charcoal drawing is an outdoor sport.

Agreed, and preferably not on a windy day, lest you end up with a face full of charcoal.

Looks like, other then texture studying, all you need is to use a straight edge tool, (ruler, long pencil, w/e) to make sure all your aspects are aligned. Such as nose and lips being centered and eyes being lined up, etc.

Most of the proportions/positioning is off on this one and I've noticed a little too late to be able to go back and fix it without making a complete mess. Hopefully I'll pay a bit more attention in the initial sketching phase next time.

Heath Ledger's Joker, my favorite! Sometimes I feel that way about my art too, but we gotta keep pushing ourselves because were never done learning. We'll get there, so stay motivated!
