hmmm....yes this is truly awesome. I'm wondering if the texture on the arm was a brush texture or a layer texture...or something completely different.
In anycase my eyes are bleeding from the sheer awesomeness of your usage textures here. They don't dominate the picture, but they're such an integral part of what I'm responding too. Few pull this off right.

thanks! it's a photo of some snakeskin, on an overlay layer over the arm area. The arm is painted/modeled just like a regular painting, then the texture is overlaid so it picks up the values underneath.

right that's what I thought you did, but it just works so damn well. Looks like you actually painted the texture.
thanks

That looks really nice. Very well done! How do you get that Impasto to stand out so much? Mine always looks flat after I save it.

francis001 In reply to ChristopherStevens [2009-01-16 17:18:56 +0000 UTC]
hm - I created a painting in Art Rage of random brushstrokes, then used that as an overlay layer in the Photoshop file. You can adjust the levels of the brushstrokes layer to increase or decrease the intensity of the impasto effect.

Thanks for the info. I assumed it was a Painter impasto brush, but you did it the cool way hehe. Either way, it really looks great.

The background is also really badass. I like your usage of a gradiant, textures and the way you push the environment to the back via atmospheric painting. Very effective.
