My biggest challenge with this as a flash fiction piece is that it's virtually all expositional narrative. In flash you get 600± words, so you need to pass on as much information as you need to in the action of the story - you can't really spend the story telling the back story as there's no room left for the punch.
We don't get to know the main character at all other than through his single action and his tone of voice, so it's difficult to sympathize with him. Make me see the character, feel what he feels and then I'm going to care what happens to him.
The idea and the background are solid, and the actual writing is smooth and reads well, but I'd use this as the unwritten back story and then write a piece with more action based on what you know from this. Show, don't tell; tell only what can't be shown, and only if it's absolutely critical that it be told.
My only other complaint with this is that it appears to be the last thing you've posted since August of last year. What gives? Get writing, dammit! Don't make me come down there!

I really do appreciate your comments Stephen, it was what kept me writing. I really miss writing and would love to try and post again. Thanks for your feedback (from three years ago :S)

Welcome back! Very nice to hear from you!
I wrote sporadically until my daughter was born in '94, then not a lick until my twins were 3 in '05 - 11 years later. I've had some hiccups, most recently I've only just started back with any consistency in the last few months after the better part of a year of silence. What's my point? Life happens, priorities shift, and things come along to eat up all our spare time. If you need to be writing, you'll be making time for that first, or doing what I've done and carving off chunks of time to deal with a raw nerve or exposed emotion. If you want to write, you have to deliberately plan time in which to do that, and be diligent. If you're a hard core writer, you'll be writing all the time without any regard for anything else that might require your attention. I would suggest that most people fall between the need and want to write.
As long as you keep writing, (and posting - I'm not going to hack into your computer to read your work if you don't post it), I'll keep giving you my feedback. Maybe not instantaneously, as I'm eyebrow deep in shit at the moment, but shortly.
Again - nice to hear from you! I hope life has been treating you well, and your young ones are making you insanely proud!
