Description A nice example of the WW 2 SBD Dauntless dive bomber. What's interesting is that it shares its outer wing panels with Douglas' DC-3. Also, the wings did not fold as was normal. This most likely was due to the stresses placed on the wings when pulling out of a dive and I guess the designers and the Navy decided that the standard latching mechanism wouldn't hold up.

Thanks. It's one of only a couple still flying.

Really? That is very sad.

Considering that most were scrapped after the war since they were obsolete and dive bombing was replaced with missiles and air launched torpedoes, it's not surprising.

True, I just though more were saved for historical reasons. But like you said, they were obsolete.

Back then, they were just war surplus and obsolete and the materials were seen as valuable so they were stripped of armaments and sent to the boneyard.

Kinda sad that happened really. Such great aircraft. Well, I guess materials were needed for other things. Thank you for sharing this information.

All the propeller driven military planes were rendered obsolete/obsolescent with the advent of the jet engine. Dauntlesses were being supplanted by the Avengers during the war, since the Dauntless was an older design. You're welcome for the information.

A very useful plane to the US navy

That it was. It's one of only a handful still flying.

Just to think that the US navy dumped a shitload of these aircraft into various oceans. . .

But back then they were just airplanes, not historical relics.

Killed more Japanese shipping than any other Allied weapons system.

Was replaced by the theoretically more capable Grumman SB2C Helldiver, a machine so hated that SB2C eventually came to mean "Son of a Bitch, 2nd Class".

Mismatched indeed, but gone a far different way than expected!

I'd have hated to be the SBD's rear gunner!

The pilot went on fighters and shoot down seven enemy aircraft in one day ... almost but not quite at Marseille's level. Marseille shot down six British fighters in one fight!

I know. I saw that on "Dogfights" on the History Channel. The Dauntless was a great airplane.
