Description Edit 2-03-08: The river now looks more like water, and Charold has a shadow. Thanks for the tips, guys!

"Thiss river iss fed by the tearsss of centuriess of sssinnerrsss....

When I first got to the Underwhere in SPM, I thought the little ferryman of the River Twygz was amazingly awesome, as I tend to think all menacing-yet-cute things with insane grins are amazingly awesome. Plus, I really love Greek mythology, and he's the Mario universe's version of Charon, ferryman of the dead (his name is Charold, as a matter of fact). So I thought, "I must draw him!" But... you know how that goes, and over nine thousand SPM drawings later, I still had not done a picture of this guy. So tonight I doodled him from memory, and I liked it so much that the little sketch grew of its own will into this.

I must say, I am extremely proud of this picture. Believe it or not, I tend not to enjoy digital paintings at all... I never feel like I can connect to a computer screen like I can to real, traditional media that's right in front of me, being held in my hands. I only work digitally so often because I have evolved a dependence on the undo button and layers. However, tonight everything seemed completely natural and flowed beautifully, and I had a lot of fun experimenting- and I think that shows. I can definitely say my muse was with me tonight, and I hope it sticks around, because it's a wonderful feeling.

That... THING that plays when you go deep into the river and the hands come out....
UGH. Still can't sleep whenever I think about that.
But anyway, nice job with the painting!

When I first played in the Underwhere, I thought River Twygz was poisoned or something, so you NEEDED the boat ride! But I jumped in anyway! XD

Awesome art! You win t3h int3rw3bz!

I went back to the underwhere after seeing this, and saw how cool the boat guy was. I can't believe I never noticed his coolness before! And went to visit grambi and.... WHATS THIS? LUVBI IS ALIVE!! Talk to luvbi: idunno but I'm back to life again for some reason. HORRAY!
Awesome pic, I don't know what those people who said the water looked bad are wrong. I think the water is awesome! I think it really stands out, that, and the boatman. He's awesome in this pic! Well done, this is great and captures the mood of the underwhere completely.
did you know that pluto's moon is named after charon?
that was an unnessecary fact.

Thank you!

Actually, I've changed the water since getting those comments. Before that, it didn't really look like water. It wasn't smooth enough. It still doesn't look great in my opinion, but water is something new for me, and I'm always learning.

I didn't know Luvbi was alive until several months after beating the game. I thought she was gone forever... how heartbreaking! But then I went back to the Overthere. I should've known a good character couldn't just cease to exist in a Paper Mario game. It made me very happy, because I quite like Luvbi... she annoyed me at first, but I came to appreciate her sarcastic/sassy demeanor, and her tone of authority and ability to take charge when needed... and of course, her ultimate sacrifice.

Yes, I knew that

Yeah, I love selfish characters in these games! Its weird; they seem to be more loveable than the selfless ones, don't you think? There wasn't much about it though, it just said she was alive and didnt mention anything else, its just like "Im alive..... what are you still doing here now?"
Bonechill used to be a nimbi, you know. (trufax) nimbis are cool! I want to be one.

You're right that insane grins are amazingly awesome, and you did a great job capturing that - love the teeth, especially. The glowing eyes are cool too.

I'm glad this picture flowed well for you, because it came out really well.

The only thing I can think of as a critique is that the river itself seems to be styled quite differently to the rest of the picture. The rest of the picture has more softly blended colours, but the river seems to be just three or four solid colours mixed together in streaks, so it doesn't seem to blend in with the rest. But at the same time, considering the river's purpose and all it represents, it makes sense for it to be a contrast to the rest of the world around it, since its whole composition would be different. So in that sense, it doesn't really matter!

Yes, looking at it now, the river does look a bit like jell-o or something XD I want it to glow and shine, but there's probably a smoother way I could do that. I plan to go back to this picture soon and see what can be done about that.

I can't buy too much stuff here in Brazil, like Wii games. Things are very expensive here x.x

How much is a Wii where you live?

A wii is $250, and brand new games are about $50, which is what I paid for SPM at the time. But it was worth every penny!

How much is it there? I'm sorry that prices get so high >_< Do games get released in South America at the same time as in North America, or do you have to wait longer too?

pokeinuyasha In reply to fluffycatgirl [2008-01-28 15:37:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, a Wii here is 1300 reais, about 650 dollars. A game is 199 reais, about 99 dollars, AND we have to wait about one month longer. Β¬.Β¬

^^ I really like it! Though...he could use some shadows under his feet. He does cast a shadow, right?

For some reason, he always seemed to me like he'd be fishing in all his spare time.

Though what he'd catch in a dead river is beyond me.

Haha, what a great picture! Your coloring never ceases to amaze me. Bright vivid colors that still evoke a foreboding feeling. Exquisite!

Maybe now that I have a Wii, I should finally pick this game up, seeing as how there's no Smash Bros. until MARCH NINTH.

Thank you very much!

YES! Get it. Of course, I shouldn't have to tell you how I feel. XD But really, I think you'll love it. The controls feel very old-school for the most part... you do have to point the Wii remote at the screen sometimes, and maybe shake it a bit to use items, but otherwise it's just like the SNES era. And it's very funny, with lots of references to older Mario games. I do know you're skeptical about Mario games being more story-based and having sad/touching aspects, but just give it a chance, because it's so sweet and well-done that it's hard not to appreciate

Gah, March 9th D: At least that's a day before my birthday, so Smash Bros will be my awesome birthday gift!

Thank you!

Thanks for the help. I'll see what I can do about the river. I'm a bit clueless on how to portray water, so right now I'm just experimenting and trying to figure out what works best.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KingGiantess In reply to fluffycatgirl [2008-01-27 00:45:30 +0000 UTC]

Are you still using the GIMP? If you are, I'm pretty sure there's a filter/script something called "water surface".

My water's not much better. Drawing water traditionally is tough!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fluffycatgirl In reply to KingGiantess [2008-01-27 01:01:54 +0000 UTC]

Nah, I've been using Photoshop for about a year now. There are lots of different filters I could use, but using filters is something that I want to get away from... it's fun, but it makes me feel cheap. I like the knowledge that I painted the entire picture myself with just the brushes given me, no gimmicks.

However, I do love to play with brightness/contrast and layers. That's not cheating, I don't think

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KingGiantess In reply to fluffycatgirl [2008-01-27 01:45:38 +0000 UTC]

Good point. Whenever I use filters, it's either for a cheap background (the HOFBrINCl had that. XP) or I use them to paint over them. ^^

All of my traditional works on here have their brightness/contrast adjusted. So I don't think you're cheating.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fluffycatgirl In reply to KingGiantess [2008-01-27 03:23:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I definitely have to adjust my traditional works after I scan them in. The scanner totally wipes out the vibrancy of the color I try to get the image as close to the original as possible in Photoshop, but it's never quite the same.

But even in some of my digital paintings, I tinker around with the colors and lighting to get different effects... for instance, I really upped the contrast of the background here. And lately I've been experimenting with using different types of layers to get glowy effects. Those are pretty basic facets of digital art, and I still feel like my art is entirely my own effort when I use them... whereas with filters, it feels like I cheated.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KingGiantess In reply to fluffycatgirl [2008-01-27 03:35:35 +0000 UTC]

Yup- I know that feeling. One big issue of mine is that my sketchbook is HUGE. 11" by 14", I think. Well, not HUGE, but definitely too big to fit on my scanner. I probably spend more time stitching together my work on the computer than I spend on the art itself!

I'm still learning digital art, so I admit- I still use filters.

Layer effects? Like changing the modes of the layers? Dissolve, lighten, dodge, burn?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fluffycatgirl In reply to KingGiantess [2008-01-28 04:11:09 +0000 UTC]

Hey, that's ok... ever since I got Photoshop, I've occasionally used filters on my backgrounds, and one of my pictures was painted and then entirely filtered, and I like it that way XD I've just recently decided that I want to get away from it totally.

Yeah, those kinds of things. You can get a lot of different effects by experimenting. I messed around with layer duplication on the foreground here to give him a little glow.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KingGiantess In reply to fluffycatgirl [2008-01-29 21:13:07 +0000 UTC]

^^ I've been putting filters on top of filters on top of filters. Lol... But I also like warping, distorting and messing with the levels and curves.... gives some pretty nifty effects at times!

Guess it changes with the artist, and that's no shame at all. ^^

I like the glow. I need to do more with layers.... when... I....actually....work....with....a...computer.
