Scientific name: Lygeum spartum
Maltese name: Halfa
Occurrence in Malta: common where it occurs
Habitat: Clayslopes and steppe, also found on some of the local islets, forming there own steppe
Description: a bushy grass with long and very thin tubular leaves. flower tufts are generally creamy white compared to the plants' overall yellowish and greyish appearance.
Other info: a dominant species on clayslopes and own steppe, and very important indigenous colonizer. may have been used as a raw material of rope or as a source of fiber in the past, like Macrochloa tenacissima.
