After Australia was discovered by the British, many countries were caught off guard. Dutch expeditions noted, that establishment of the colony is not feasible, French and Spainish were exhausted after the Seven Years War. Except a small expedition lead byΒ Hanover, which was encouraged by the British and settled in the north, most of the continent fell to the hands of the British. In 1830, a first large settlement in Western Australia, Swan River, is established.

In 1900, discussions about independent unified Australia lead to the conference where delegates from each state/territory were invited. The negotiations backslided when delegates from New Zealand, Fiji and Swan River refused to accept the unification bill, as their respective laws would have to be changed and the fragile peace between the natives and settlers would've been fractured. Furthermore,Β New South WalesΒ and Victoria went into a discussion over the capital city, Victoria proposing Melbourne and New South Wales proposing Sydney. Eventually, the deal was settled with the capital being set up in Canberra, which was later detached fromΒ New South WalesΒ as a capital territory. Furthermore, after the protests from Swan River, the state of Southern Australia accepted the federation deal only with a clause allowing it to secede after a popular referendum.

In 1910, Northern Territory was created out of the detached parts of South Australia and between 1927 and 1931, Central Territory existed. In World War One, everyone was surprised when former Hanoverian subjects, which were under German Imperial Rule, refused to fight for the German Empire, declared independence and helped to occupy the German Papua New Guinea. Eventually, New Holstein was granted a full independence with a clause, that they are not allowed to declare war on the Commonwealth of Australia.
Shortly after 1945's fall of Nazi Germany, Herman SΓΆrgel, a German architect hoping to promote the idea of Atlantropa, surrendered to a Australian battalion stationed with Area 3 in American Occupation Zone in Bavaria. In a operation codenamed "Sandwich", SΓΆrgel and 27 more German architects were smuggled into Australia in exchange for their architectual knowledge.

In 1946, Central Territory was restored as works on Lake Eyre started, hoping to create a inland sea to make areas in Central Australia habitable. The pumping mechanisms, finished in 1956, started filling in the basin and by 1962, the work was declared "Completed", although the water level was settled on +33 meters by 1965.
In 1971, Queensland agreed to cede neighboring areas to the booming state of South Australia and to Central Australian Territory and two years later,Β New South Wales followed the suite by ceding bordering areas as well. New local administration of the Blue Mountains Territory, which was detached out of those ceded areas, quickly boomed economically as well as the Central and Southern Territories.

The Liberal Prime minister refused to officially accept Central Australia and Blue Mountains into states and still declared them as territories, fearing, that local Labour-leaning population would sway the elections against him.
After the exchange in the house, the new Labour Prime Minister won the elections by allowing the Southern Territory to vote on its independence along with Blue Mountains, Northern and Central Australia. In a very controversial vote and due to political shenanigans, every state/territory except the Northern Territory voted for secession, invoking the erraniously phrased provision in the constitution and creating a new independent "Republic of Eyre" in 1979.
After that, Australia went into a political crisis with billions being lost in a expensive system in a country, that broke away in a botched political gambling. Northern Territory, being the biggest drag on the economy of Australia, was given another vote and voted to join the Swan River, hoping to create a trade bridge, as the new state of Eyre cut away most of the border territories.

The next elections were a massive Liberal victory and the new leadership took the opportunity of securing the boundaries and decided to disband the capital territory in Canberra and "temporairly" move the capital to Sydney in the pretense of "better position due to the proximity of the new border", and the majority government backed the decision up, as the Victorian politicians found themselves wastly outnumbered. Impending riots in Melbourne and in Tasmania killed thousands of people and established a dangerous precedent, as a car bomb was stopped in front of the provisional parliament (in Sydney).
Eventually, Victorian and Tasmanian politicians agreed to sign a "good sunday" (reference to the at the time actual "Good friday" agreement between the UK and Ireland) agreement, granting Victoria and Tasmania a de-facto independence, but they have to hold a referendum on wether to rejoin Australia on every parliamentary elections.
4 years after the agreement, in 1991, the Commonwealth of Victoria signed a association deal, which unified the political deals, set the currency of Victoria to be the Australian Dollar and settled the open border agreement. As of 2021, the required 60% to rejoin Australia were never reached, with the majority in 2006 elections (53%).

It's said in the lore. It's actually a terraformation project based on real proposals to create a larger lake out of real lake Eyre. In my scenario, the lake water level has been raised by 33 meters.

Cool! Honestly, I'm not really happy with the name, but I couldn't find any historical data on other names before it was changed to Western Australia...

Actually, this map was rather a test of if I can make maps with a shading for height instead of my classic colour schemes. Honestly, I get you, but that's not really a thing I was worried about...
Thank you for your appreciation tho!
