Description Specialshipping picture! I suppose I'll just enter it in the "First Date" contest for

Currently in the mist of a style change. It's happening slowly though. I'm trying to change my faces a little bit, and make the people have more meat on their bones. I've been drawing people really skinny. Still didn't really accomplish that here, so still working on it. Also, I wish I can color in a lighter tone than this. Also, the face coloring bothers me, since the blush always doesnt come out right....
Overall, not very happy with my abilities right now.
Must improve and try new stuff....
and yeah, still working on the style change.
I tried new stuff for the background, and some worked, some kinda worked, and some didn't as well. I suppose its alright for now....

Looks like Red and Yellow got their pinkies tangled again. Oh ho ho.

i love how you use copics. in fact i think i worship everyone who uses them well XD;
and you can draw backgrounds pretty well too! which is great since i know a lot of artist *including myself sob-sob* who get stuck at drawing them

Thank you so much! Copics are so much fun. I'm glad I took the risk and got them, because I've never colored so well in my life. (Given, its not great coloring, but its a start yes?)
Backgrounds are pain for me too, believe me! I'm forcing myself to learn, since its good for manga-making, and it makes every picture nicer!!
Thank you! I will not lose my motivation! *w*

No problem at all <3

I find markers in general fun to use because they are much faster to work with than pencils. I spend like 45 minutes for skin with colored pencils just to do all the shading and with markers I can do the same thing in 15 minutes.
( i have some korean markers which are similar to copics but a little cheaper and i often use them for practice, even though i have like what five? orz;; )
but everything has a price i guess since you must be more accurate since markers don't have a magical eraser like pencils and you must be fast yourself to do a good blending while the strokes are still wet XD

i know that feeling D: Right now i'm just at the colorful but with a lot of details backgrounds and still find that hard to do orz;;

and if you do i'll help you bring it back ~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fishenod In reply to keiko-chan17 [2010-08-15 03:14:23 +0000 UTC]

Markers are much faster. That might be why I enjoy using them so much versus my color pencils. I never had to patience to nicely color anything using them.

Working fast isnt actually really difficult. Did you see Jo color the skin? She colored the face first with the skin base, then to blend, she only worked on one side of the face, so she can switch and blend faster. Then she shades the other side, and repeats this several time to get the blending she wants. C: It will not be a difficult task at all if you do it in small parts.

Only 5? Which colors?

It's much easier to blend when you work with dark colors, cuz they dont dry as fast (for some reason.) Oh yeah, as a warning, dark colors spread and bleed more so than light colors. In fact, light colors dont spread or bleed very well at all, so thats just a cautionary note for you.

Backgrounds are overkill. I spent more time coloring the background then I do the foreground. OTL

Yay!! But I dont want to lose it! I really want to do something with art for a career, so I must keep on improving. I only got 2 years until university, so I gotta work work work!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

keiko-chan17 In reply to Fishenod [2010-08-15 16:54:34 +0000 UTC]

pfft i always lose my patience after the first 30 minutes when i use color pencils. i just continue drawing anyway (self-torturing much?)

i really like her videos. i often watch them as a guide when i use those few markers i have thank you for the tips!! i'll note them somewhere to have them when i'm coloring again with markers

[link] this are the markers i was talking about > w < i only have W100,V162,B159,G158 and R129

looking at this [link] i totally understand what you mean OTL;;OTL;;

good luck with that!! i'm sure you'll do great ~
my plans for my career is to study japanese and to make it my major in university and to become a manga/light novel translator. although my all-time dream is to become a mangaka but i'll have to wait for it i guess > w <

Fishenod In reply to keiko-chan17 [2010-08-15 21:34:52 +0000 UTC]

haha! Self torture? well if it gets the job done...I guess its ok? xD

If you need advice, I can always try to help OTL. I'd love to watch Jo color i real life, but I dont think anyone has or ever will.

Must be hard to blend with only those 5! Dx the color range is so different! Although looks like R129 and V162 COULD blend if you worked at it enough.... Maybe B159 and G158. Do you try blending them together?

I went to an Anime con and saw Copics being sold there. I was tempted to buy a few to play with, but they were selling them really overpriced, and I didnt want to accidentally buy a marker that would be in the set 72B, so I just didnt. I had to order my set, so while I waited, I got 2 markers and played with them until I got my marker set. It's much more different whne you have more colors than just 2 or 5 of them.

I want to go manga work for a living too. My parents are asking me what I want to study, and honestly, I really just want to do something with anime art, like maybe animation, game design, or my favorite, manga work, but unfortuntely, i'm too scared to tell them. They want me to go into medicine, but I dont like medicine very much anymore. The idea doesnt really appeal to me.

I dream of being a mangaka too! I'd love nothing more than to wake up every morning in a little apartment, and wait for my assistants to show up (or if I'm the assistant, go to work) and all of us just draw together. All. Day. Long. C: And best part: no need to dress up for work!!

yeah at least the final work is worth the torturing

really ~ ; A ; ? thank you <33!!
maybe her friends 8D ? it would be really amazing to meet her in real life. pfft all the things that i would ask her XD

well i tried and the ones that work best together are
V162 and W100 which I use a lot for skin tones. the others i use them for casual doodles and touch ups when i need them ^^ but thank you <3 tomorrow i'll get some money since it's my birthday and i'm going to spend it on some new markers just to see how they work

i know the feeling. before i bought my prismacolor pencils online i was tempted to buy a faber-castell 72 set off pencils since that's the best brand of pencils they sell here. i finally bought only a 24 set which was the cheapest and practiced with them until i waited for my 120 prismapencils *o*

ugh i feel lucky with my parents about that. they are usually very strict persons but when it comes to my career they always tell to just follow my heart because it's better to do something you love rather than doing something i might just simply get sick off. they would be happy even if i would be a firefighter because they'd hate to see me feeling miserable when i grow up.

well tell them. it's your future after all right? i talk a lot with my parents and trust me it helps. it's not your fault that you don't like working in the medicine field. try to explain to them that the poor artist type of career is just a really bad stereotype and people who work in the art industry, like designers or animators get well-paid too. and i don't think they end up on streets or worse just because of that really it's best to follow what you love because that's you. your decision in life reflects a lot about your unique personality and everyone who have the possibility should climb up for their dreams.

that's the best part to be a mangaka and the fact that you can wake up whenever you want it's another great plus <3

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fishenod In reply to keiko-chan17 [2010-08-16 05:34:50 +0000 UTC]

The final work will always be worth the torturing, unless for some terribly reason it turns out horrible, but most of us would hope that doesnt happen! xD

Of course, I love to teach others how to color. Makes me feel like I know what i'm doing OTL. I met Jo once, but it was just kinda like a buyer-customer relationship. She was pretty cool though, and so was her friend! I bought the last Miku print she had in stock for $1, and her friend, who drew Manku, offered it for free to me, and Jo started laughing, and all 3 of us were laughing, so I took it. xP

Oh well then you found what works for you! Yay! Life is good!! Keep it up. ANd YAY FOR BIRTHDAYS AND BIRTHDAY MONEY! Always great stuff!! I'd get Copics to play with this time around, if you're planning on getting Copics later. But you'll have to look up colors that aren't in sets that you may potentially buy, to avoid wasting money.

I need lots of colors. Like actually do need it. Anything less than 50 colors is unacceptable for me. Every year, I'd buy a new set of 72 Crayola Color pencils because every year, I'd use some of them up, or I let people use them and they would lose like a third of my pencils, and I'd get SO mad. Really really mad. So I always get a new set each year. Prismas are so great. Even with only 36 colors, I can create more colors by blending. (even thogh I dont use my color pencils, I feel awesome having them) and 120 PRISMA PENCILS? That's a lott!!!!!! *w*

My parents do want me to be happy too, like they told me, but I still dont think they accept my art as a serious career. Like I understand you gotta be GOOD to make money, but I'm not really into money, and I can get good enough to feel confident of my abilities in the next 2 years! My dad told me that I have shown "some talent" for art, but not enough to make it a career, but that was before I got my Copics. His tone has been changing lately, but he still sees it as a hobby rather than a possibly career, so I'll work at it and prove them wrong!
And honestly, they wouldn't/couldn't stop me if I pursue art. Maybe they wont be happy with it, but hey, it is pretty much decision, yes?
The only pity is that I do really well in school, and I guess they expect me to do soemthing with my good scores and pursue a knowledgable career rather than art. I kinda feel like I'm letting myself down, but I honestly wouldn't be happy with anything else, unless I somehow change my mind in the next 2 years.

No need to dress fancy, wake up whenever, and just draw/plan before the deadline is up, hanging out with people you choose to work with you, how great is that?

i really know what you mean. i once worked on a sketch really hard but when i started inking, my hand accidentally slipped and i ruined the whole picture i was so mad at myself then but now i feel like it was worth ruining that sketch because now i'm a lot more careful when i ink and it comes much more smoothly then it did before that!

your must be talking about =e1n right? i could totally picture him doing that XD

i'd like to purchase copics, but here you can find copics only online or at cons. and shipping will cost too so unless i'll buy a full set it's just a waste of money to buy 3 or 4 copics when i feel like i'm ready to move on i'll buy a full set of copics > u <

besides i'll get like 35 bucks from my parents, maybe another 30 from relatives so i could buy around 10 or 12 new markers. but first i want find out if the shop sells sets or they sell them individually only

haha that's funny XD i know it's a lot but i need them for blending and the amazing colors and quality they have. i begged my parents since 5th grade to help me purchase a set and i gave like half of my savings just to buy them. and it was really worth the effort. right now they're the most sacred thing i own my cousin once tried to touched them and when i saw that i gave such a scary face he said he'll never touch anything that's mine for he's own good *laughs*

2 years it's a lot of time. i think you should practice hard and if you continue to improve as much as i believe you would you would do just fine in an art career. if it really suits you, i think you should do it ^^

well every little progress is a one step closer to your dreams right XD? if you really want that and you'll try hard i'm sure they'll understand how much art means to you and you really want to make a career out of it.
anyway i wish you good luck with that i hope you'll become whatever you desire you too and i hope that you'll get along with your parents as well!!

being a mangaka is like being your own boss most of the time * 7 *

I dont mind wasting the time, its just I hate wasting the paper! I screwed up 3 pictures so far, and its a pain, since the paper costs a lot. If I mess up, I dont mind, since I can usually replicate the drawing free handed, or just use tracing paper if I'm really lazy, although most of the time, when I mess up, its cuz I drew somethings really weird, an I noticed them, and I decide to restart.

I learned to be more careful with my inking too, but most of the problems froms the the sketching. I don't notice the mistakes until AFTER I ink, which is really unfortunate.

Oh well, in that case, just buy the Korean markers. I forgot Copics are really hard to obtain outside of the US and Asia. I have a lot of foreign friends who always complains about Copics because they have a hard time finding them.

hahah yeah! Yeah He was so funny. xD

I rarely ask for anything from my parents, so I can save all the expensive gifts for my birthday and Christmas. Although I usually ask for one either once a year, or once every few years. I dont mind people handling my art supplies if I'm there to watch them. If they steal/break/damage etc anything, I go ballistic. *w* My Copics must be the most sacred thing I own right now. xD And jeez, 120 is still a lot. I'd be so happy if I had 120 as well, but seeing as I dont like color pencils anymore very much, my 77 copics are enough to keep my happy...for now....
Watch, come Christmas time, I'm going to be begging for another set for Copics. probably. We will see xD.

Thanks! I will keep working at it then!

I think my parents might know in the back of their head that I'm set on pursuing art, but I guess they're hoping I might change my mind. Using the guilt trip to make me change my mind LOLz. No way! XD

Being a mangaka would be aaamaaazzing!! <3

to avoid wasting the paper i always use 2 sketches. the base sketch in which i include everything and i make sure that every detail is in it's proper place it's done on a normal printer paper. i then trace the sketch on the watercolor paper and i look up for mistakes which are much easier to correct now since the sketch is very clean and the paper isn't damaged from the erasing i did on the printing paper. then i scan the final sketch and i print it a couple of times. on those copies i plan the colors and when i'm happy with a copy i keep it on my side to remember which color goes where. i then finally ink and color which is always my favorite part since all the hard job was finished when i finished the sketch process

yeah copics are really hard to find but i don't mind

i usually ask for something only twice a year, on my birthday and christmas. so i kinda use the same tactic well if it's anything but the prismacolor pencils i don't mind someone using them. but when it comes to them i go crazy and act like an old lady with her garden dwarfs

i know it's a lot but i won't get nor buy any other pencils until i'll change with copics so i need them to last longer and to still keep me satisfied o u o
well good luck with that ;D you totally deserve more copics anyway > w <

aren't all parents like that 8D? i know that mine say they don't mind what career i chose, but i know that they still want me to become a university teacher like my mom *laughs*

Fishenod In reply to keiko-chan17 [2010-08-18 02:59:43 +0000 UTC]

I just sketch really lightly now. I dont have to worry about tearing holes in the paper, since my thick marker paper is really good in terms of enduring constant erasing. I used to always damage my paper because it was so thin, and I drew so darkly, and I would erase so much so I would tear it. But luckily, I improved a lot before I got my copics, so now I can usually get stuff right the first few times, and I dont have to erase a ton. I used to sketch on something, trace it, and make copies, but now I feel confident enough to be able to sketch once. It's time saving. You will be able to one day! C:
I love the inking and coloring process now. I enjoy sketching too, but once I ink it, if it looks nice, I get so excited. Adding color makes me even more excited. C:
Well that's good! Copics are pretty worth it I think, even with its difficulty to acquire.
AHAHAHAHAH!!!! Oh my goodness, I love that! An old lady with her garden dwarfs. C: Really good similie! I can totally imagine you freaking out too.
Well, that's always a good thing. You'll need them to last for a while. When do you think you'll be ready for copics?
Wooow your mom is a university teacher? That's really awesome! What does she teach?
And I've been meaning to ask you for a while. Your profile says you're from Romania, and I assume you don't live in Asia or the USA, since you say that Copics are hard to come by. But you English is amazing! It's incredibly good, and I've never seen someone outside of Australia, England, or USA write such fluent English.

that's sounds like your not wasting to much time. i should give that technique a try some day (:

one day .. one day i'll buy copics and then not even all caps on could express my joy as i did with my prismacolor pencils i bet i'll sleep the first night with them with the package still untouched just to wrap it the next morning like i do with christmas presents 8DDD
who wouldn't D: ? especially since prismacolor pencils are hard to obtain as well OTL;;
well i still think i should give it 2 years. to practice on anatomy and things i'm not good at i want to at least be at a decent level when i start with them, they're professional markers after all right XD ?

eh thanks ~ well she teaches something about economics, tourism and geography as i recall. she changed her teaching subject last year so i'm not familiar with the new one yet

thank you i've bean speaking english since i was 3 years old, because back then cartoons were not dubbed so we had the original english voices. i was always asking my parents what they talk about and some words and phrases i figured out on my own. i remember my cousins who were already in elementary school back than used to play tricks on me and ask me various things in english and surprisingly i managed to answer well at most of them. sadly when i turned 6 cartoons got dubbed and i couldn't learn english anymore and because i really loved the language i asked my parents if they could get me a private english teacher. which i'm going to once per week almost all the time ever since. she teaches english at the same unviersity as my mother and i'm on very good terms with her. and i'm really thankful because of her i'm learning english for a 9th grader level, although i haven't even started my 8th grade. and as odd as that i manage to understand too

but sadly, as much passion i put in english, i suck hard at french, even if it's way more similar in many ways with romanian (since they both have roots in the latin language) while i ace my grades at english i barely get an 8 or 7 at french (here grades are marked by 10 to 1, where 10 is the highest, and 5 is the passing grade)
i feel like i'm betraying my roots OTL;OTL;OTL;

HAHAHA that sounded like fun! (what you did with your prismacolors)
Prismas are easier to get than Copics. Actually, here in the US, I found a set of 24 selling at a local office-supplies store. Copics, you gotta drive like 30 minutes to an hour to an art store to get them. >.<
They're not PROFESSIONAL markers, but they are the PREFERRED choice of markers for PROFESSIONAL artists. x) I think there's a difference. x)
And I probably already mentioned it, but I had absolutely no experience using any coloring tool before I got my copics, and it was huge risk in itself for me to use them. I'm just glad I managed to get the hang of them so fast! Now just comes improvement until my coloring is neater and nicer! C:
Ooohhh since you were 3? I only learned when I was 5. I was speaking Cantonese, since I lived in Macau. (next to Hong Kong) We moved to the USA when I was 5, which was when I started learning English, but I can still speak Cantonese, just not read or write it. i'd love to learn Japanese, and i'm learning Spanish in school right now. ^^
It's so good that you kept your interest in English and are continuing to learn it! Good for you! English is used worldwide, so its a really language to know. ^^
My friends all take French, and they all love the language, but say its a hard language as well. ^^ Although the romantic languages all have similar roots, I think French has a significant amount of differences! I'd also like to learn Portuguese. My dad speaks it, and i'm half, so i want to be able to understand it too!!
Dont worry! I have a Mexican friend who fails Spanish.
