Description

Shaky limbs forced themselves up from the surface. Zaatar pulled himself from the gutter, his mouth gaped taking in the fresh air, the clouded leopard dropping gently on the ground from his jaws. Zaatar's legs, no, entire body screamed in pain and exhaustion. With a hacking cough and relentless dry heaves, the snow lion collapsed besides the elderly clouded leopard as the rain pelted him from above. He forced out the rank water that wormed it's way into his lungs, then he weakly shifted to his older companion, his paw lightly rocking the dappled feline's shoulder. "Hei...Leaf, we made it."

The older male didn't respond for a moment before his eyes slowly opened and he looked at his young companion. He had fortunately been able to keep his mouth closed as Zaatar pulled them through the water and to safety. His body hurt still but it had faded somewhat to a stiff, physically weak feeling from being tossed around in the water. His body felt oddly cold but he didn't shiver in the rainfall. "Boy... Are you alright?" He coughed a bit and attempted to pull himself up only to find his body failed him and he gave a sharp inhale at the movement.

With a smaller cough Zaatar answered, "Y-Yeah..." His voice lower, and raspier than usual from his burning chest and throbbing throat. And though everything in his body protested, Zaatar pushed himself up onto his limbs, it felt like his brain was still swimming in the gutter from the lightness in his head. "C'mon we gotta-" Another cough racked his body but he didn't falter, "We gotta.. get moving- Before they can track us."

Leaf gave a small rasping laugh. "Haven't felt the rain in so many years..." Truthfully, last time he had gotten out of the cells a small drought had claimed the lands. The rain had come the day of the raid on Fire Empire, but he had already been caged up by the Hunters and tossed into a covered wagon then. He glanced around with his eyes calmly, surveying the area, before setting them on Zaatar. He gave the boy a small smirk. "Kid, I think.. you gotta go on without me... Those Hunters chewed me up back there.. I don't think.. Im gonna be able to celebrate our break out.."

Zaatar's head whipped around. Wide crimson eyes fixed on gold, no, not again. Please not again. His heart falling to his feet, he vividly remembered watching the life from his mother's eyes fade. And the old man even had the audacity to smirk at him.

"Don't say shit like that Leaf!" He was just joking, right? A stupid old man joke, they were so close. Their freedom was on the horizon.

"Can't help it, Boy.. I'm old and worthless.. Hurt me too bad.. I think I lost too much blood." Leaf strained to rise again, rolling himself onto his stomach and placing his chin on a paw, eyes raised to meet Zaatar's. "You've still got your life ahead of you.. You should run while you can and get back home."

"But- you still need to meet Pandora and Forseti, Kraken too!" Tears pricked at the corners of Zaatar's eyes, but he didn't let them fall. "We've made it this far, you cant give up now."

Leaf couldn't pretend to be okay. That would be selfish. The only one that would comfort would be himself. Much as he wanted to comfort the younger male, he didn't want to give false hope.. Trying to think of the right things to say was hard. Was there anything right to say? "I'll only slow you down, Boy," he grunted a bit snappishly. He gritted his teeth. How he wished he could meet them too. "I'm sorry, Zaatar... I've failed you.."

"Don't-" the dam tore open and wet drops rolled down the younger male's cheeks, "Don't apologize!"

Leaf's eyes widened for a moment before a gentle look crossed his face. "Little demigods do cry sometimes, huh? I've always.. been a bit afraid you keep too much bottled up inside.." He coughed. "It's not the end, Kiddo. It never is." "I'm not-"

Snot dribbled down Zaatar's nose, his paw partially obscured his face A feeble attempt to dry up his draining eyes. With a choked sob he denied, "I'm not crying!" Zaatar's head fell against Leaf's. The spiky but soft bang pressed into the clouded leopard’s forehead. Zaatar cupped the old cat’s face in his pawing, holding him like he would break with the slightest amount of pressure.

Leaf wished he had some memorable, heroic statement to say. "Of course you're not, kiddo." He gave a raspy chuckle as Zaatar gently held him, barely feeling the tears roll down his own cheeks. "I guess.. If it's not too much to ask.. sit with me a little while longer? I could use the company..."

Zaatar's reply was a choked sob, words failed him now the only sound uttered from his lips were his labored breaths. Softly he rubbed his forehead against the elder cat, just like when he was left with the corpse of his mother.

Leaf said nothing more, doing his best with the last of his strength to curl around the younger cat as the rain poured heavier around them. Thoughts of everything else slowly disappearing with the final thought of his little flame huddled beside him before finally, it flickered out. Zaatar did not stir, even as Leaf grew cold. And eventually he let his own consciousness fade in the bitter shower. His tears washed away with the storm's deep in the drain and darkness and through that stepped was the sentinel.

It occurred in February of last year (41 BC), just late getting it out cause life stuff haha =u=

Sad Fact: Since the death of Fire Empire, Leaf has never seen Ice Empire, the faction he belonged to. They will never have met him outside of a few captured Ice cats
