Our Vivid is really busy too and they have a fence in the way which makes it hard to shoot too!

I have to learn to night shoot but its hard if you hardly ever go out at night and interesting night shots are at least 1/2 h drive one way away

Would you believe that I drove for 1 1/2hrs each way to take these photos?

wow!!!! ok I still have a lot to learn from you. Can you help me a bit with settings for night shots? I only have my build in flash and my night shots so far where FAR from being good

Unless you are shooting people in the foreground you won't need your flash. You need a tripod and a slow shutter speed . My opera house shots were all shot at around F2.8 , Shutter 1/15th and ISO 2000. Different cameras handle ISO better than others. You really need to experiment and see what works.

ok I noted that down, gotta finally repair my tripod the head vanished into nowhere the next light show will be in late summer as far as I remember... though its nowhere as spectacular as the opera in Sydney! Right now that town nearly was flooded! We had severe rain for weeks with rivers flooding many cities in Germany, Czechoslovakia and Austria. Wasserburg got away , but only nearly the main bridge was closed down for traffic for some days.

You know, Malcolm--I'd have to see this in person a couple times before I'd ever get as good a shot as what you get. I'm pretty sure I'd forget all about photography and just watch the show

That is so beautiful!! @//U//@ What is this Vivid Lights festival? Is it just lit up buildings? What is that blue streak on the left, in the sky?

FireflyPhotosAust In reply to mokitodoki [2013-06-01 02:17:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, the blue streak is the laser light beams being projected onto the sails of the Opera House.

Where are the laser lights are being projected from?

They have erected some scaffolding and they use them or from the tops of existing structures.
