Description Here is Roxanne in a rejected version from 2002. Even though I was happy with this design, the Producers wanted her glasses made smaller and more square. They also had a real problem with her chin, fixating on it. They felt that the tip of it was "too square" and therefore "too masculine" so I changed it to a point just to get the design approved, so that we could move on. Obviously I didn't have a problem with it, there are plenty of women with squarish tips to their chins. I feel that something was lost in their note. I still like this version.

Large glasses make her look too young / small. It was probably the good thing the size was reduced.

The large glasses are very cute! I wondered why they gave her small square glasses, because they always seemed to cover up her eyes at the wrong angles.

Which is exactly why I gave her larger glasses, but one of the Execs wanted the square, half size glasses so my hands were tied. The sooner I got the main cast approved the sooner I could get their model packs completed for production.

What's the problem about masculine-looking? It can be beautiful. When I think of many cartoonized women. I think some of them are too feminine. I like a little bit of masculine. It makes a drawed woman look human.

The female characters were always the hardest to get approved. The Execs in this case were women and they were the harshest critics of the females characters. The expectation is that female characters have to be beautiful, but I design characters, not some ideal of beauty. Also there is no definitive beauty, we think we all agree, but from my experience no two people agree absolutely. For one of the lady Execs this slightly squared off chin was a sign of masculinity, it isn't, this Exec just had issues. This design brought her issues to the surface, like a Rorschach Test.

In my opinion she is a very beautiful one. Exspecially because she is "not perfect". I think that a woman is beautiful if she looks human and not perfect. Besides that: I love women, which wear glasses nad looks not really sexy. It makes them sympathic and I begin to love them of their humanity and character

Wow.. Producers are just ... what's the word.. . picky?

I really need to pick your brain about cartooning.
And I promise I will only resort to actually using a pick as a last resort.
maybe...
most likely...

Each character in the Tutenstein main cast went through a process of "guess what I'm thinking", "nope, guess again". It's a little game that Execs who can't draw, and usually have no idea in their head to begin with, like to play with artists. I'll know it when I see it kind of mentality.

Send me a note if you want to ask me something.
