It's bizarre, because I was so insecure about my nightmare jollin and I was sure no one was going to like it...and I don't think it got a bad comment. This bloodred version, on the other hand, I have loved from the start, and it's reception was a lot different. Not all bad, at all, but enough negative comments to make me suddenly doubt myself!I feel like I want to go into my reasoning behind this pose. Firstly, this video: [link]
I love love LOVE how quietly and subtley this fox captures its prey. It's body is so limp and non-threatening as it pounces, even though it is about to bring death upon something else. I've wanted to use this 'silent death' pose for the jollin ever since I created them, and was happy to finally be able to with the bloodred. I would have liked to have it looking down instead of at the viewer, but BR is a colour where eye contact is necessary, I believe. So he's pretty angry that you've distracted him at the last second!
A lot of people are saying the ears look wrong - too pointy/they should be laid back. Well, I know they shouldn't be laid back because they're listening out for the prey in front of them, but I'll accept that they didn't translate to cartoon for some people as well as I would have hoped. Now it's been pointed out to me I feel like I want to move its left ear (our right) more towards its left (our right) but there isn't actually any canvas space left, and making more canvas space would decrease the overall jollin size which would be even more of a travesty for me! I have to just tell myself that it's done, I loved it upon release, I need to stop letting other people change my opinion on my own art XD
Still, even with the differing opinions on this, I can say I'm proud of it. He's a special guy to me, this one

Actually, before I even read your description for the artwork, I thought to myself "Ehhhh the ears bug me". Otherwise, I think the pose is fantastic, the face is great... I think its the closeness of the ears in that erect position thats throwing me off. Realistically, I don't think an animal can perk its ears up and have them that close together. Otherwise, this is another bloodred favorite for me. And if you like how it came out, thats all that should really matter.

Mmm, very true, but then again this isn't a real life pet! You would believe it if you suddenly saw it in real life, I expect. (No one believed the platypus until they saw a live one!) So I can only say the jollin can in fact put its ears this close together xD

Every pet isn't for everyone, I guess. I knew what you were going for as soon as I saw this one, and I love iiitttt. Probably doesn't help that the ear positions remind me of some types of bat that put their big ears just like that when listening, and bats/foxes are pretty much my favorite mammals ever. ;o;
The detail in this pet is just gorgeous, it makes me wish that it fit one of my characters. 8(( The shading on the gray is especially beautiful.
Don't ever doubt yourself, Rah! You're a wonderful pet artist and you did your species justice without a doubt. I know a bunch of people got one of these pretties (Andrea got one in like 10 seconds, haha) and I'm sure it will grow on some others!
Seriously though, NM Jollin is a tough act to follow, poor little Bloodred. I pity *any* Jollin that had to be released next after that beauty. XD

I hope it's a grower! At least yeah, I've probably lowered expectations now, so maybe i'll blow them out of the park with the next jollin that comes out XD

I've got to say...the thing I don't like about this is his ears.....they look SO out of plays on it. maybe if they had been pinned back or moved around....something
I loved the Dark Matter one.....and the pose is great on this blood red....but the ears make me not want this color
and that dose make me sad...because the whole thing (not the ears) make me want one...I love the color and spot colors as well.....
but the ears, sorry if I made you feel bad about yourself, and note I do like this pet.....and do hope you enjoy drawing it...

Pinned back wouldn't have worked as it is listening out for prey in front of it. Lol you mentioned hating the ears 7 times here xD I'm glad you like the rest of it?

Yeah, I was restricted a bit by the canvas shape with the tail. I would have preferred to have it trailing out behind the jollin but this was the best compromise I could make! I'm glad you noticed the fur, though n__n

I don't understand the negative comments, but eh. I adore it.. one of my favourite Jollins along with Nightmare and Glacier. I love how you did the spots! The way the red bits look like blood smears haha. And the pose is spot on x]
This is making me anticipate the Reborn even more. That's the main one I am waiting for now <3

I really, really like this Jollin, as I said on the News post about it haha! I actually think the ears are fine, I don't know what people are complaining about it, really. I also don't get why people are trying to critique something that's already done and likely won't be revised, but oh well haha.
I guess people are just used to other animals laying their ears back? Idk. I think mainly though, people are confusing aggressive with ... hunting?? Aggressive animals, to my knowledge, will put their ears back but animals hunting likely won't. OF COURSE I AM NOT AN EXPERT THOUGH.
Anyway this is so lovely, I like this big version as you can see all the details! Like the bloodsmear spot rosettes are so clever and so well done. I really like the shading, too, and the blood in general hahaha. I love that Jollin's face, too! I think you did really well, I actually quite like the face and how subtle the expression is. So yeah, really great work haha. AND YES I AGREE WITH YOU IN SAYING YOU SHOULDN'T LET OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINIONS SWAY WHAT YOU THINK HAHA. This is lovely and you should be proud.

Yeah, when the .jpg edits start coming out in the news comments you know you've created some serious reaction xD Which I suppose is nice. I mean, people would have to care a lot about the jollin in the first place to have expectations and hopes...dashed XD I suppose indifference would be worse?!
You're right though with the aggressive vs. hunting. The nightmare jollin has his ears back (not terribly far because they're huge and that's how far they go) but the bloodred is really just listening out to what's in front of him. If I could change it I'd like the eyes to be pointing forward but oh well!
BUT YES I AM IN GENERAL FINE WITH THIS. It's like people telling me Disney is awful. No matter how many people say it, I'm like LOLNO. MAGICAL. WONDERFUL. CANNOT BE SWAYED.

Haha aw that's a novel way of looking at it! Yes I totally suppose so but omg I always think people have this like, super special imaginary mental image of what a pet will look like and they probably just get disappointed cause oop sorry artists can't read minds!! Hahaha.
Yeah I totally get where you were going with this one! I think maybe the eyeslooking at the front would've been nice too but I actually really love the sort of lazily annoyed expression this one has so I think it all works really nicely haha.

You know I didn't notice it at first, but love, LOVE how the spots are bloodsmears - like, the insides of the rosettes? CLEVER, clever Rah! <3 Also really enjoy the subtle annoyed look it has. The type of threat, of terror in this pet, is so.. it's very quiet. It's different. I really, really enjoy that about this pet.

I don't understand the rude comments in the newspost. I guess people just think their opinion on how fox-type animals hunt is right and that's that, doesn't matter that they're wrong! I really like how pointy the ears are! It's nice to see something that hasn't been done yet for them! And I love how creepy he looks with his front paws like that along with the mouth/facial expression!
I'm sad I don't have, like, 10 more spaces to get each of these new jollins .. so my pet Matthew is going to have to deal with it for a few months and just model all the new jollin colours that are released! Now which one to start with...

As far as the news comments, they weren't /too/ rude...mostly xD I can deal with them pretty well, it's more just that I can't agree with them. It's weird. To me, what a lot of people don't like, is what I like best of all...so that's a hard thing to say 'I'll think about this next time for sure!' xD (Am I supposed to start releasing things I don't like?!)
