Riesling is the son of Pinot Noir, and makes a living as a sommelier in one of Equestria's most upscale restaurants. He's got a very friendly and approachable appearance, and among his colleagues he has a reputation as very knowledgeable and charming presence. He's quite proud of his own small winery, where he produces just a few bottles of high-quality wine every year, made only for his private consumption. As unintimidating as he looks, though, he's got a dark side that only a few unlucky ponies ever see.

Summer Jelly is a seapony that lives in a small, colorful coral reef village outside of the main kingdom. She never received a transformation necklace and thus has never transformed into a hippogriff, though truthfully, she doesn't really mind that. She's quite happy in her little town, making a humble life for herself surrounded by friends, and she worries that such a big change would upset the balance in her life. She's never met her father nor even learned his name, and as many times as she's asked her mother, her mother never tells her more than she already knows. Her father, whoever he was, was accused of treason and fled the sea, and no one has seen him since.
