My first post for 2012! This is inspired by the Pre-Raphaelite photo shoot of Saoirse Ronan in the December issue of American Vogue magazine. It's called The Cult of Beauty and you can view it here:[link]
I am such a fan of the actress. She is attractive, expressive, grounded and intelligent among so many other things.
I have not practiced the classical painting style for some time as it is quite time-consuming but I do love it. I decided to reinterpret J.W. Waterhouse's Boreas with Saoirse as the subject of the picture. I got ideas from seeing her in Hanna, with her fair hair and porcelain skin; as well as The Way Back, where her costume suits this particular painting.

Saoirse Ronin is an actress, she played the lead in The Lovely Bones. Waterhouse is John William Waterhouse, one of my all-time favorite artists, who painted The Lady of Shallot.

As do I. I'd like to continue this series, featuring her in all sorts of great paintings. But, for the moment, I only have time for some speed paints.

Your color choices are lovely, and well suited to the whole composition, I'm drawn in by the translucency of her skin and that billowing fabric - this is sumptuous!

Thank you so much for the kind words! I am usually too lazy to really apply myself to a painting like this, but over the holidays I had the time and inspiration to see this through to the end. It's very rewarding.

Thank you. The colours are different from the original painting, which was more blue but I prefer mauve as it suits her fair colouring.
The muse I use Saoirse's face for is Hel (Norse Death Goddess). I've been reading up on mythology recently. Saoirse seemed a good fit, she has a ghostly look about her and plays characters who are mature beyond their years.
