Description

Okay this has really been getting on my nerves lately.. and it's not just because I see it constantly, its that so many people do it on here.

I see people commenting here and there all over dA with their little wahs "OMG my art is so not good!!!" "Omg i quit drawing im shit" "no one commissions me blah blah blah!!"

Im sick of. I get it! your art may not be the best of the best but it is still your art. If you are so displeased with it then do something about it. Whinging to the whole dA about your artwork/style/technique will do you and your art no good.
These "fantastic" artists didn't just roll out of bed one day and became amazing when pen hit paper. NO! It takes time. It takes PRACTICE.
Take control of YOUR art. Nobody is going to be their holding your hand, if you dont like something work on it until you do. You'll only be as good as you want yourself to be.
You can't expect to drive a car for the first time and get your lisence, so why do you expect to be davinci when you've only just started drawing.

Another thing I don't get is when people complain about not getting help with their work or improving when dA literally has 100's of tutorials on every subject under the sun. We artists didn't make them for the heck of it, we did it to HELP YOU.
You have to take the iniative when it comes to art and push yourself to beyond what you do. It doesn't take long to figure out anatomy/shading/coloruing/lines/backgrounds/facials/ect. Even if you do it in small sections. Take your time, art is about artistc expressionism. The only person who is going to be 100% there for you is YOU!

Sure it easier just to draw the same old dogs, but why don't you push yourself beyong all that? Try some landscape, a dinosaur, a building WHATEVER. If you want people to take your art seriously (i.e job wise) that fluffly dogs won't impress them too much. And if you get into the habit of drawing the same old thing all the time never extending your style or your techniques then how will you ever improve?

You should take pride in your work... it is your own! Who cares if it is crappy.. it is your artwork so other peoples shitty opinion shouldn't matter. Of course you will care, but at the end of the day you should stand by what you make in thick or thin.

Of course most of this is easier said than done, but I've been drawing off and on for the last 8 years... Do I think I am at my best yet? NO!! But with every new artwork I do I gain more practice and further my artistic capabilities for the next work I do. I constantly want to improve my work so I can be the best I am.

You can only push yourself to be better. You are the one who is going to improve your work.
Im always here to help people out. I am happy to give advice or redline or give your constructive cristism so don't ever be afraid to approach me. Or another artist if you so please. We are all the same and I can guarantee that most of the time they'd be willing to help you out a bit if you were to ask them nicely.

I love your and your work is fabulous. Don't ever second guess your talent!

I get flustered with myself in my journals especially when it comes to not getting feedback or commissions :'D I don't say that my art is crap, I'm just searching to find a few good solid commissions other people will be interested in lol
But I get ya, the extreme downers just irritate me. u-u I used to have a few friends who literally made every journal about how much they hate their own artwork and themselves generally, and I tried to encourage them so much! They never turned themselves around no matter how hard I or their other friends tried to comfort them, so I unwatched them. :I Just couldn't deal with it anymore lol

I, too, have a hard time getting commissions. I think this has more to do with networking than your art skill. This certainly helps, but there are many popular artists who's art isn't as good as some unknown artists. Joining groups, giving people feedback, creating fanart and gifts are all ways of increasing your exposure to others. It takes time and effort to develop rapport, so just keep at it.

If you want feedback, I'd be more than happy to do so. Just don't expect any commissions cause I have no monies. xC

Yeah I think I agree n-n I'm tons of groups and hundreds of people watch me. I used to comment on deviations from random people all the time (I still do sometimes), give gifts, all those things. I was extremely successful with icon commissions but after doing literally hundreds of them, I got tired of it and here I am stuck doing the things I love more. LOL

And thank you, I would greatly appreciate it if you would! You don't need to, of course. ;u; I shall check out your art soon too!~

Sorry that, even though you've done all that, things still haven't worked out the way you've wanted. I know my whole life has turned out pretty much that way. I guess you just keep at it, control what you can and take what comes your way. Yay for generic simplified optimistic statements!

I have a hard time..."getting around to things" but watching, faving and giving feedback are definitely on my to do list.

YES FINALLY SOMEONES SAID IT.
it pisses me off when they constantly whine and expect to be better in a click of the fingers.
ive always liked my art, and im somewhat proud of it! for a while ive never said any of my art is shit (unless its frustrating me |D)
theres someone i watch, their really talented for their age. but all they do on their pieces is go "this is terrible" "my art is terrible blah". they just dont bloody understand its brilliant.

and im always trying to improve, using new techinques and styles. i was doing some facial expression excerises the other day (pretty hilarious doodles too).
sadly, not everyone bloody realises that practice helps and sitting on your butt doing jack shit doesnt.

Its a good thing your putting yourself out there and trying to better yourself!
Its always fun doing random little experiements while it doesnt seem like much at the time it definitely hels in the long run!

While I totally agree with 99% of your post, I feel like sometimes it's not a bad thing to put yourself down. I normally use it as a challenge to improve, especially after I butcher the anatomy of any piece. XD

felw In reply to soleistice [2012-07-27 05:55:27 +0000 UTC]

I think there is a huge difference to even putting yourself down which i wouldn't even call it and plain old whining. Looking at your own work and find flaws in a construvtive manner is completely different to looking at your work and just going it's shit. At least by looking at it with your own critism you can find your own flaws and the things you don't like and as you said improve whatever you don't want. So yeah I dunno its pretty much the same to what I said in the journal hahaha Im not too sure what you mean?

soleistice In reply to felw [2012-07-27 12:08:51 +0000 UTC]

it's a bit hard for some people to like their own work but as you said.. attention whoring it out is pretty pointless! personally I don't believe in 'talent'- just hard work.

Indeed. Even when I sucked and was new, I also knew that talent came with time, and that just by starting and taking the initiative to stick to it, meant I was going to appreciate my talent. For example, if I could get a quarter for everyone that said they could only draw stick figures, I'd be rich, and everyone that mentioned it, made me smile a little inside, because I was at least trying more then them to improve and make it something I could be proud of. c:

Very well said! I really hate that some artist on here expect to "all of a sudden" make great art work by buying things like photoshop, sai, etc. Art takes a hell of a lot of time, sweat, tears, and practice! Thank you for making this journal!

What a coincidence, I actually just set up a things I'm calling "Sketch Weeks" earlier today.
If anybody is interested in improving their art through sketches, check out my journal: [link]

It's also appreciated if artists do some crits, now that you mention it.

If people are on FP and interested, there's a post for it here: [link]
