Description The Tiger I is a German heavy tank of World War II, operated from 1942 in Africa and Europe, usually in independent heavy tank battalions. It was designated Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf H during development but was changed to Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausf E during production. The Tiger I gave the German Army its first armoured fighting vehicle that mounted the 8.8 cm KwK 36 gun (derived from the 8.8 cm Flak 36). 1,347 were built between August 1942 and August 1944. After August 1944, production of the Tiger I was phased out in favour of the Tiger II.

Undisputed dominator of the battlefields in Europe, the Tiger combines good protection, great mobility and incomparable firepower.

However, there are several flaws that are noticeable: its gearbox breaks frequently, and the Tiger is often the victim of an engine failure. The tank is so heavy that it is used to the limit of its capabilities. Most Tigers are not neutralized by the Allies, but rather abandoned by crews as a result of mechanical problems. Finally, the lack of fuel at the end of the war is problematic for the Tiger because it consumes a lot. Furthermore, it is also difficult for German industries to produce as many tanks as necessary.

In Normandy, they have Panzer Tiger divisions responsible for launching an offensive against armored vehicles (three battalions are equipped: 101 and 102. SS-Panzer-Abteilungen and 503. Panzer-Abteilung), these tanks are too few to really disturb to the Allies. However, actions such as those carried out by Michael Wittmann in PzKpfw VI Tiger show me the superiority of this tank, considered one of the best armored vehicles throughout the Second World War.

Today, only seven Tiger I tanks survive in museums and private collections worldwide. As of 2020, Tiger 131 (captured during the North Africa Campaign) at the UK's Tank Museum is the only example restored to running order.
