Scandinavian Republicans generally tend to go for more boring designs than this though, don't they? In Norway, the most widely proposed flag change seems to be a red flag with a white and blue band on it. (Nordic cross sans the vertical line)

Anyway, I quite like this. You might want to make the lion a bit less detailed, as shading of any kind should generally be avoided on flags, but the design itself is pretty good. Using a CoA of any kind on a Republican flag may not be a good idea though, at least not in a modern Republic of Sweden. (People would probably come with complaints like "How is my kid supposed to draw that in kindergarten!?" and whatnot.)

Luckily not supposed to be (very) modern, I intended it to come into existance in the middle of the 19th century. And just a funny fact: I based the design on the flag of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy.

Since it's a 19th century republic of Sweden, the new lion will do just fine. Looks much better aesthetically now too.

Someone recently posted [link] in their blog in connection with a "what if Norway had to get rid of the cross on its flag?" thing a newspaper had going on for a while. The comments on it mostly seemed to consist of "That's way too complex, how could kids ever draw that in kindergarten?" and "I'd rather be associated with Christianity than slavery" ('cause saltire made it look all Confederate and all, I guess.)

So yeah, if it was more modern, the lion would probably still be considered "too complex" by most people.

And for that there is a simple solution: The variant above is the state flag and a variant version without the CoA is the civil and also the state flag.

And regarding that alternate Norwegian flag. I don't see why people are complaining (with the exception of the drawablility-aspect, though e.g. the US is also lacking in that regard). Furthermore: People on the internet are stupid, seeing the Stainless Banner where it totally isn't (Scotland stands for slavery!)

Again, more or less all the complaints are directed at the drawability problems and Stainless Banner similarities. Funny how said banner wasn't even used by the Confederates.

Personally, I always had problems getting the nordic cross right, and would have preferred something more along the lines of a saltire, but whatever.

For a republican flag, it looks feasible enough.

Interesting that Sweden would switch its CoA to that of a lion. I still think the Three Crowns would remain our CoA even if we would become a republic. After all, the Three Crowns aren't linked to the current royal family. In fact, they even predate the Kalmar Union. Also, it's the most popular/well known symbol of the country (it's present on the 1SEK coin).

The lion is taken from the coat of arms from the House of Bjelbo, which can be found on the greater Swedish coat of arms. However I modified it to make it more generic, since I wanted to avoid monarchist or monarchy-reminiscent symbols (like its original crown, the Three Crowns, etc)

"I didn't know Vikings still existed. - They mostly live in Minnesota."

Sorry, reflex. And for the record: I like the Bernadottes.
