Cinderpaw's father was the ambitious and ruthless deputy Serpentclaw who had even murdered the former deputy Amberflight so he could become deputy. Her father was a dark silver tabby, with hard, emotionless amber eyes. Her mother the the small, quiet Silverbird, who had soft blue eyes. Silverbird had two kits with Serepentclaw: Cinderkit and Kindlekit. Some say Silverbird didn't choose to have kits with Serpetclaw freely. The rumor is Serepentclaw held down the she-cat down and forced the pretty tabby to mate with him. The Clan believed this because whenever Serpentclaw came into the nursery, Silverbird would hide her kits the best she could, covering them with her fluffy silver tail of placing them between her and the nursery wall. Serpentclaw would come in and abuse Silverbird when she would not give him his kits. He would smack her left eyes with an unsheathed paw, giving the young, pretty she-cat an ugly scar. This went on for days on end. Until long, Silverbird ended up blind in her left eye, it being so scratched up that she almost lost it. She had to tell her clan mates she got scratched by a branch while she was taking a walk, afraid Serpentclaw would kill her. One day, a younger queen by the name of Ebonystep, padded over to the nursery to rest (she didn't have kits yet) and witnessed Serpentclaw abusing his mate. The black queen hid behind a bush until Serepentclaw left, then ran into the nursery and asked Silverbird what had happened. Silverbird broke down and told Ebonystep everything. The news traveled across the clan and soon the clan put two and two together and figured out the truth about who had murdered Amberflight. When Serepentclaw was exiled, he returned a moon later; when Cinderkit and Kindlekit were five moons old. He killed Ebonystep, Silverbird, and even his own daughter Kindlekit. He then drug the dead bodies through foul smelling plants to hide his scent and left them outside for the dawn patrol to find.

When Cinderkit awoke the next morning, she wandered outside and found her dead mother, sister, and Ebonystep outside in the camp. Her clan mates were mourning for them, tears falling onto the ground. Cinderkit pushed past them and dug her nose into their bloody fur. The leader sympathized this older kit and allowed her to become an apprentice a moon early, hoping this would get her mind off the losses.
