Dead trees, that is so sad... I remember I saw trees with similar short branches but they were cut on purpose because the branches were dry and could break and collapse on people walking beneath. And since the trunk of the tree was still alive, it had chances to grow new boughs. I hope it is something similar with these trees and they will be able to grow again...

Yeah, I've seen similar things done when trees are too close to power lines, so the road crews come and cut off the branches that were touching the cables... but as you say, those trees are still alive and tend to still be able to grow around them... I'm afraid these seemed more completely dead, as their trunks were all bleached (and I remember seeing them leafless when we drove past them earlier last year on this same road, in the middle of summer).
It's indeed sad... and also so puzzling... I don't think someone would have poisoned the trees on purpose, because if they had wanted to clear the trees away from the field, they would have just cut them down, instead of leaving them standing like this. All I can figure out is that somehow the trees got poisoned by accident (through pesticides in the field or somesuch--maybe the crop-dusters flew too close to this treeline without realizing it), or else maybe they had some sort of strange disease that spread through their root systems, all down the line....

Yeah, it really was... I found it so puzzling and sad both... are there any tree diseases that are "contagious," passing down to other trees in a close row? That was all I could imagine could have caused it, and I just wondered, since you study plants....

Yeah disease and parasites can spread from tree to tree like that. :[
