Description A paddy field viewed from 'Randenigala' area - Sri Lanka
Please view full You never see the glory of it in small view.

"Rice is the staple food of the inhabitants of Sri Lanka. Paddy crops is cultivated as a wetland crop in all the districts. The total land devoted for paddy is estimated to be about 708,000 Hectares at present. There are two cultivation seasons namely; Maha and Yala which are synonymous with two monsoons. Maha Season falls during β€œNorth-east monsoon” from September to March in the following year.

Yala season is effective during the period from May to end of August. When the crop is sown and harvested during above periods, the particular season is defined. However, the whole area devoted for paddy is not being cultivated due to number of reasons such as shortage of water during the seasons, prevailing unsettle conditions on the ground, etc"

Hey farcry, it's been a while. I see you've been keeping up on the great shots, too. I have nothing yet. Too busy with school among other things.

But I will leave a odd note behind, as I usually do with pictures:

If you could imagine that area without all the rice fields, you'd have yourself a nice looking valley. And a rather innovative one at that, like movie scenery or something.

But everyone likes rice. Why take it away?

Well that's the wonder of it. There are not irrigatio issues here. Water comes from the mountains

How does the water flow in, then?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

farcry77 In reply to Kngfishergrl [2008-03-18 01:30:56 +0000 UTC]

There are small opening made to the paddy field from certain distances. So the water slightly flow in and fill the paddy field. When the water level is up to the required farmers close those openings and keep it till the next day

Our weather timetable has been upset. It's supposed to be summertime but it keeps on raining during the afternoons and evenings. Darn climate change.

There's such a gorgeous variation of scenery in Sri Lanka. It seems like everything you have is set against a background of a lush green hillside, beautiful mountains, or at least a breathtaking sunset. You're so lucky.

On the hill side of Sri Lanka this could be a common scene. But need to be at the correct vantage point to capture it this way. Thanks.
