This is amazing. The action. I love you caught them in the air, fighting for the ball. Wonderful!

Great shot, Abby. I would crop half of the bottom and about a third of the left side. This may make the image a bit softer...but a slight sharpening may help that. I see this was shot with a 200MM @ F2.8.. Did you get one of those babies or is the school suppling it for you?

Thanks for the advice!! I like this shot but I wish I could see both of their faces. The reason I cropped it the way I did is so that it would be using the rule of thirds. I think if we did pick this one your advice would be brilliant as it would show off the players face the most.
The photo editor of our school paper kindly borrowed me her 70-200mm lens for this. I was told our school would have tons of stuff to use but haven't found that to be so yet.

That's commendable to remember the rule of thirds...but like most rules they were made to be broken from time to time. In this shot that rule is not helping. The action here is wonderful...peak moment..so let's bring it out. Having all that "stuff" to the left adds nothing to the drama..in fact it takes away from it. If all that were on the right hand side...maybe there would be justification for it...but since your action is heading towards the right..this crop makes one follow that action out of the picture. Whichever direction the action is headed this should be more image left over in that direction. But with sports most times the surroundings aren't as important as the play itself. Here with my suggested crop you have all the information needed...the two players, their hand grasping at the ball, the field with the goal marker. We don't need to see the soccer goal or as much foreground turf. In sports as tight a crop as possible on the ACTION is what people want to see. Check the sports sections of your daily newspapers...they are pretty much all tight crops. This is great that you are shooting the practices because plays can be anticipated easier than actual games.
That's great that you are getting to use this lens..its a sports/journalist's "money" lens. That is a must in the bag of every action photographer.

Wow!! I have just thought and thought and thought about sports photography.
Do you like it better now or does it need to be cropped even more?
**I think I need to rethink my sports photography approach. I usually see it like anything else, where I let other stuff add (or truly take away...) to the photo instead of letting the action speak for itself. I usually try to capture everything that happens rather than use a huge lens to zoom in on chest up shots of just one person. I am not comfortable with that level yet but really want to try it.

In MHO this is much better...a city desk sports editor may put crop marks on it for even further cropping before it was printed...depending upon impact and how much space they have for the graphic. Why? Because newspapers are in biz to sell ads...and ads dictate the room that is left for news stories and photos. This wasn't always the way of the "press" but it is today for 90% of the rags that try to pass themselves off as news.
