When I spotted the thumbnail for this I felt so much emotion. I knew I had to view this full size. I was left speechless. This is a powerfully emotive image and a wonderful example of conceptual photography. Utterly captivating.
I love horses, I love their nature and their beauty; their strength, their grace and power. Their highly strung spirit and uncanny ability to sense your emotions, and when you befriend a horse they entrust you with their friendship and they reciprocate with loyalty and non-judgement. They are beautiful creatures that depict loyalty, strength, virility, grace and emotion. If eyes were ever considered to be windows of the soul this old addage is ever present when you know horses... This is why I adore this image. It is a beautiful capture of the essence of a horse and the relationship it has with its owner... The title 'Memories' makes the image incredibly powerful and emotive... and unforgettable. The title suggest humanisation of the horse... and respect for this living creature... acknowledgement that this is another sensient living being... a creative that feels pain, senses danger and returns love when shown the true meaning of the word. There is so much love in this horses all-seeing eye.
I have given FULL MARKS for vision - mainly due to the title and my interpretation of the concept behind the title. This is the only image that has moved me to tears in a long time. I feel a sadness, a reflection of times gone by. I believe horses, being as sensitive and spirited as they are, are more intelligent and emotional than many people do not give them credit for. A beautiful and arresting image that geniunely moved me. A true vision.
For originality I have given 4. I have seen a lot of images of the eyes of animals - cats, dogs, horses are no exception - however - few manage to encapsulate the essence of these amazing creatures.
For technique I have awarded 4. I think the decision to exhibit this image in a black and white format was choice - it galvanises the nostalgic theme. Black and white is a beautiful format that is very powerful when mastered. I would, in my humble opinion, have liked to have seen a little more depth to the eye itself - more specifically to the reflection and immediate area. I think the lashes and reflection would have more impact if they were burned in a little more. Too much light dilutes the images reflected - making them appear too dim and distant. I know that this is possibly what the photographer was aiming to create however I think they are a little too bright.
The crop and composition is flawless, as is the focus - pin sharp detail of textures giving the instant and often elusive WOW factor... Beautiful.
For impact, I have given the photographer FULL MARKS. As stated earlier, this image took me by surprise and moved me to tears. Only when viewed FULL SIZE does the viewer realise the power, the grace, the strength and beauty captured here... and the layers of depth of concept to this INCREDIBLE image...
... I want to see more. Viewing 'Memories' has made me want to view more from this Deviant, and I WILL be watching...

Wow. That is absolutely stunning. There seems to be such sadness in the eye... but such beauty.
