Description My eyeliner makes a little fish

Annnnyway. Wearing a ton of makeup because I was attempting to do another O.Wilde picture, but that failed miserably. This was one of the outtake shots that I happen to like. I look like a deer caught in the headlights

Gradient map, crop, border.

Oh yeah, and full view

Fantastic job whether you like it or not.
Great side lighting. That effect works prefectly. I also like the fact it's B&W.
Out of curiousity, what camera do you use?? Very sharp lens I noticed, especially in the full-view.

Over make-uped and over touched-up eye is obviously da's taste..
As I believe you have some talent, I would advise you not to fall in the trap of making such pictures. It looks like a recipe for popularity on da..
Don't waste your talent and stop shooting on the wrong side of the camera..
The iris lightening is really exagerated on many of your pics.. if it can look appealing for many, it spoils the portrait for anyone who has a trained eye. Keep it natural and improve the lighting before the click..

That was a friendly comment

CameraDude In reply to OlovPhotopov [2006-06-19 05:31:00 +0000 UTC]

ok buddy... you're comment really, really bugs me... and i hate being an ass to people but...
you really have no right to give people comments like that. what you said was no critique nor a friendly comment in my opinion. i dont think this would be a photo that would make her "fall into the trap of making such pictures." my god, if this is the type of photography she wants to do, well then... this is what she wants to do!! how could it make her fall in a trap!? it's a good, with little editing done to it.
"dont waste your talent and stop shooting on the wrong side of the camera" ... well, they are her pictures you know. she has the right to do what she wants with her photography. it is all art and photography, very good as well. i wouldn't consider it shooting at the wrong side of the camera at all.
oh, and in another one of your comments, "you should develop that style dispite how pretty you look" .... ugh, i dont even need to say anything about that... except that it makes you sound like a .. prick.
i'm sorry... actually i'm not, but comments like that bug me, when people assume things of people's photos, critize them, and act like their opinion of is completely right.

that was a friendly comment

"people assume things of people's photos, critize them, and act like their opinion of is completely right." Is'nt that what all critics do? how do you want to give a point of view, on such a subjective matter (it's art as you say) without assuming? .. I'm sorry, english is not my language, but that word 'assume' seems to really cover some negative connotation..
According to your comment, artists can do whatever they like "because it's art", and me, as a viewer, all I can do is shut my mouth because openning it would means assuming.
My opinion remains a mear opinion, you're right on that.

CameraDude In reply to OlovPhotopov [2006-06-19 17:54:34 +0000 UTC]

no actually, i preffer a good critique rather than a comment like "great shot!" ... but that is not what you did at all.
when you talked about natural lighting and how to improve it before the click because "it spoils the portrait for a trained eye." well that is assuming because she did use real lighting and did very little editing to her eyes like she mentioned in the description.
i think it's great to leave critiques, but again... what you left was no critique. you just hammered down the photographer and her style of photography, as if your way was the only way. telling people to not waste their time on the wrong side of the camera is not a critique at all. you have no right to tell people that... sorry.
i could keep ranting, but i think i'll stop here .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

OlovPhotopov In reply to CameraDude [2006-06-19 18:17:23 +0000 UTC]

I don't know if my comment was a good critique.. maybe it was clumbsy, but yes, I did spend time browsing her gallery.. (rewarded by 'friendly' insults, thanks)
As I replied already, my comment on editing was a general one, not on this in particular.
I did'nt hammer her down, I simply mentioned the artistic direction that I prefer within what she is showing.
What else.. I insist that shooting on the wrong side of a camera is'nt in my eyes the most rewarding way of being a photogrpaher.. and if you read her answers, you will see she agrees.. You may mention Mapplethorpe if you have some photographic culture, but I think he was in a radically different artistic attitude.
Now you can keep on if you like.. as for me I will have a look into your 'activity history' and see what you call good critique.

After reading this duel of sorts, I can only say that I wish I could get critiques like the one you gave. My only experience with being 'critiqued' is getting the "I like it" type mentioned above.

I'm not here to plead for pageviews, I would just like to point out that getting an intelligent & concerned critique of your work shows that people are paying attention and care enough (one way or another) to make their point of view known.

I only wish I had talent enough to be graced with viewers like Olov.

As for the photo, I like the fish concept with the eye makeup. Was it your initial plan for it to resemble a fish or did you notice it after applying it? The sharpness of your images leaves nothing to be desired.

EvilxElf In reply to OlovPhotopov [2006-06-18 21:59:51 +0000 UTC]

Okay. I figured I should have explained this in the description.

My only edits: Gradient map. Crop. Border.

I used lamps for the lighting. It was like that. And the makeup was originally for an Oscar Wilde photo that I'm not posting. I usually do dodge eyes a bit (and I state when I do). This one was not dodged. So the lighting was not edited. You may dislike DA for the recipe for popularity, I hate it because people assume waaay too much. Self portraits are 5% of what I take and about 50% of my gallery, mainly because I don't have permission to post everything because I mainly take pictures of children.

Now I appreciate you believing that I have some talent, but please don't try to pass this off as a friendly comment. Did you just come back from reading coxi's journal and decide I'm one of those people?

And I'm sorry if I sound pissed off. I am going to defend this picture though because it was not as edited as you presume.

OlovPhotopov In reply to EvilxElf [2006-06-18 22:51:43 +0000 UTC]

I read the description.. The eye dodging comment was a general feeling after viewing your gallery.. and generally, I find it overdone (this for example [link] )
You certainly sound pissed off.. and I'm a peaceful person so I won't go any further. A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.
Sorry for disturbing.

EvilxElf In reply to OlovPhotopov [2006-06-18 23:48:41 +0000 UTC]

Okay, I calmed down. I always read those types of comments at the wrong time (my mom was on my nerves). I overreacted before and I'm sorry. I can see what you mean about over editing eyes, but thats the look I like. Different tastes I guess.

And nice use of the Oscar Wilde quote

And I apologize again for being a bitch before

Glad you recognized him! big fan of his.. even though I only read Dorian Gray.. terrifying book btw!
Tastes, yes.. Well we may come from different backgrounds, I still think that this kind of photography [link] (that fits my tastes alright) is a much more rewarding path than selfportraits if you are serious about photography. You should develop that style, despite how pretty you can look.
But you say it represents a small part of what you do.. If authorization is important to you, may I inquire why you don't ask for it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

EvilxElf In reply to OlovPhotopov [2006-06-19 05:06:44 +0000 UTC]

I definitely agree that that type of photography is much more rewarding. This particular photo was an outtake of a school project though and I just like it. Self portraits are what I do when I'm bored.

I get permission to post a lot of the photos of the kids, but this one little girl I'm not allowed to post pictures of and I have a ton of her. I actually had to take a picture I got a DD for down because her mom didn't want it up.

But really, I'm sorry again for being a bitch.

Yet another gallery piece. You *do* know that when you finally have a show, you're going to have to have prints ready to sell, right?

Technically this is pretty much as close to perfect as you can get as far as I can see. I've got no qualms with it anyway. Not from my "Do I, or do I not like that picture?" point of view, nor from the "Okay, is the focus and lighting, etc all right?" view ingrained into my brain in college. Beautiful piece as always. I had a lot of beauty to build on from the start though, so that helped.
