The jaegers are supposed to protect humans though, not hurt them... but if there's a jaeger there's probably also a kaiju, and then you should run.

If that stands for rocket propelled grenades like I think it does, then no. Normal weapons don't hurt them, their skin is too thick. You need special anti-Kaiju missles or plasma cannons to get through.

Rpg is like a bazooka but cheaper and actually blows up in a smaller radious but is faster

Yeah, they had to hit the first ones with nukes to kill them, but that caused too much damage to the cities, so they built the jaegers to kill them without completely destroying the cities.
