Cool. I'd love to see these ship comparisons include present day ships—some super tankers and aircraft carriers are huge, too

When the movie Battlestar Galactica premiered in 1978, a sci-fi magazine (I don't remember which one) interviewed Glen Larson who was asked "how big is the Galactica"?
His answer was "approximately 2 miles long". That would be about 10,560' or 3,218 meters. I've read other "official" lengths for it online, but I really don't think you can get more "official" than Glen Larson.
Just sayin'.

Well, I read some idiots that had a Nova Class Starship as small as 164 meters.
Then, her designer, Rick Sternbach, revealed the Nova's true length: about 222 meters!
You can't get any more accurate than her actual designer!
(Which makes a Nova Class roughly twice as big as a Defiant Class starship.)
Good News: If you're in command of a small Nova Class science vessel in a Galaxy Far, Far Away, you outgun everything there by about two centuries! Their "turbo lasers" won't even make it past your navigational deflectors! And, who needs a giant Death Star, when a single photon torpedo will rip away a planet's atmosphere?
Bad News: The Prime Directive. You can't interfere!
Just FYI, we ROLE PLAYED this scenario out! Ricky, our chief engineer, traded a shuttlecraft with its computer memory core INTACT, for a speeder bike! When we got back to Earth, Admiral Uhura was TICKED! "Gentlemen. I'm only going to say this once: Go back, get that shuttlecraft, and ERASE its memory core!
We got back all right, but the new space-folding mechanism went slightly fritzy...we ended up 20 years after our first visit. The Imperial Star Destroyers had phasers, photon torpedoes, warp drive, and OUR combat shields! So, we had to slingshot around a sun, and recover Ricky's shuttlecraft. He went straight to the bottom of the promotion list!

I don't remember but, wasn't the Omega class 1500 meters long, and the Shadow hybrid the size of the one you measured?

Euderion In reply to Pootisman90 [2018-04-10 20:30:50 +0000 UTC]
The 1714,3 meters is stated by the Babylon 5 Art Director Tim Earls, and is considered canon. Different fanwikis tells the size of 1750 meter for the Omega-X Hybrid.

Then the Omegas are bigger than an Imperial-II Star Destroyer, and are the small ones in the ISA.

my i suggest the bridge dome. in the fist episode we see bridge has a sunroof like dome. if u can determon the size of the dome u can come up with the length. best as i can tell. the length of the dome is about 6 to 7 yards (closest thing to meters i can come up with) if i has to compare id gess its between the size of an Intrepid class Federation ship and a Naboo Nubian class Corvet. hope that helps. ^__^
PS its awsome to see the Andromeda here. feels like its been more forgotten than Babylon 5

How did you measure the Rodger Young length? In the wiki the only info there is that is a transport ship, and that it blew up. Respond back please.

I dont have a link right know, but a while ago, Sonys Official Starship Troopers website listed the Rodger Young as a Ares class with 550 meters length.

Yes, at least two. The Athena class and the Marauder (which is just a Athena with two superstructures) class which are both around 2000 meters in length.
There was also the John A. Warden seen in the background which was at least double the size of the Rodger Young.

Damn, talk about big and realistic! And since there are a lot of those ships (I think), the feds could give the Republic a run for their money!

You know it's funny but when you look at comparisons like this, it's easy to forget that even Nimitz/Ford super carriers despite only being 330 meters in length may need up to 5000 or more people to run and fuel them and such. When you get down to it, many sci-fi designs are almost too big.
Hm do you plan on putting in an Ascension-class vessel here from Star Trek? Or say the Autumn-class from Halo?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Euderion In reply to wellis [2015-11-17 13:49:24 +0000 UTC]
Yes, right. But you cannot forget, that ships like the Enterprise-D or Andromeda Ascendend are much automated. So crew size doesnt matter anymore.
I will try a couple of other Size Comparisons in future. I will add the Ascension there.

An image that might help with this comparison, is the picture mentioned in the TNG tech manual, showing the outline of Enterprise-D superimposed over the Paramount lot in Hollywood. It *is* online, but I cannot summon quickly an appreciatively sized image.

This is quite interesting. As mentioned above, I, too, did not realize Moya was that large. I never bothered to compare shows before, but I think I would have put her around the size of the Enterprise-D, at most. Great work!
