So in other words, they're Supergates (or did Mass Effect come out before the Ori Saga? In which case, the Supergates are more like Mass Relays).

More or less. You dont enter a gate or such in the Mass Relay. It creates a mass free corridor you can travel in to bypass laws of physics.
The Supergates, in Stargate is like beaming in Star Trek. Objects in transit between gates are broken down into their individual elemental components, and then into energy as they pass through the event horizon, and then travel through a wormhole before being reconstructed on the other side

There are .mesh files who work in the posing program xnalara (free). In there you can export them to an .obj file which are usable for most of the regular 3d programs.
