Description A flight of Heinkel He111's proceeding up the Thames estuary towards London, late summer 1940, engaged by a couple of Spitfires while their comrades fight off the fighter escort high above.

Another one based on the work of a great digital aviation artist, Gareth Hector's 'Eye of the Hurricane'.

The He111 model (Available at Renderosity) was radically re-textured, and I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out. The clouds were a bitch to integrate into the image and took 3 attempts, but I think the result is just about ok. Had to pay for the background image, which I changed quite a bit, taking out modern structures and roads, extending the fields. I also had to extend the plate by over a third to the left, paint in new clouds, adjust colour and haze. Overall pretty pleased with the final result of this one.

Cheers...Ian

Iconic shot! Even got the subtle turning vapor trails in upper background of the sky...one the things I always remembered from Battle of Britain shots.

Thanks, but I must give Gareth Hector the credit for the general idea of the piece...I just wanted to see if I could come close to his piece.

Nevertheless, producing your own spin it in 3d/photomanip is no easy feat, I dare say yours has a more gritty realism than I've seen of online views of his piece. The Heinkels in the BoB really had blue prop noses?

Since you seem to know these artists, are you a member of Military-Meshes or Mil-Art by any chance?

No...I'm not in their league...I just did some research of aviation art when I wanted to try some of my own. I must admit, I haven't done much since. Might try some more one of these days.

Looks like everyone found the nits I really like this render scene and especially the way you did the propeller blur, a lot of aero artists and photo manipulators go a bit heavy on blur, but yours looks just right. I agree with aeremael and really love the cloud background in general.

great render, i'd like to point out a few things:
1. that spitfire and HE111 in the bottom left are gonna crash (i *think* )
2. spitfires had 4 machine guns per wing, not one, afaik
3. the spitfires and hurricanes usually came from behind the sun and high so as to take advantage of the bright light and limited dorsal defenses of german bombers (very few had mechanised and pressurised turrets, and HE111's was open to the elements, a position everyone hated)
4. clouds look vintage/sepia(!!!) (gives kinda old-ish look, i LOVE it!!!)

cheers!!!
please make some Focke Wulfs sometime

Thanks for the comments. I can't take credit for the models I'm afraid, my modeling skills are pretty lame, although I'm sure this is a pretty good representation of a Spitfire MkV, which I know puts it too early in the war for this image. I'm afraid I used quite a bit of artistic license, although I wasn't really going for historical accuracy, I just wanted to make a picture with a Spitfire.

Thanks again.

Technically perfect. Just, if I recall correctly, the Spitfires used in Battle of Britain did not have cannons, just series of machine guns integrated in to their wings

That's a wonderful artwork. I really like the way you achieve to depict the real drama of the fightings in the air above England during the Battle of Britain.

really impressive work. my only gripe is the use of the Spitfire MkV. it is part of the historical significance of the B of B is that planes like this were not available, nor were there enough experienced pilots who could have made good use of them.

Those could be Spitfire Mk.IIb's b wing armament was two 20mm and four .303 caliber guns and since a few 10 and 12 group squadrons were field testing the 20mm cannons then it is entirely possible that these two Spits were from one of those outfits. Still good work on the picture all around and the excellent work on the glass jawed bombers.

EStreet In reply to Wingnut55 [2010-08-01 15:28:01 +0000 UTC]

That'll have to be artistic license, and the fact that I don't have access to any other model at the moment. I'm struggling to model a Hurricane at present, which would obviuosly be far more accurate in tackling German bomber formations, but my modelling skills are average at best, so it'll be a while before I can get it finished.

Thanks for the kind words though...and well spotted.
