I actually have never seen this show until recently when I browsed YouTube the other day. Astroganger is actually quite interesting. What seperates him from other giant robots known at the time is that Astroganger was an intelligent sentient robot who did not require a pilot to operate him. So in this show, it wasn't the host or the pilot who was the main focus, but rather, the hero is the robot himself.

Agreed. I especially liked some of the battles he fought with his enemies. Pretty intense action for a 70s anime. But then again, Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger were pretty intense as well.
