Hey, someone else got as close to a hummer as I did! Nice pic, and he does look a bit rotund compared to my guy. [link] I've posted a few, pics, but I am saving the majority of the macro shots to see if I can do something special with them. Mine hangs out in an apple tree, but I see him less now than I used to... I suspect one of my neighbors may have put up a feeder. You have a nice gallery, and I will take some time to properly go through it sometime soon.

Wow, really great shot. I'd like to see a hummingbird some day, the problem is that they don't live here :> How big (or small : D) was this bird?

Central coast of California and they all disappeared a day or two after I posted the photo

It's funny that you called him(he's a ruby throated hummingbird, I believe, but he might be one of the three that look like that) fat. ^_^ He's so cute all fluffed up like that, guarding a feeder? No surprise for a male. Hummingbirds are surprisingly territorial.

ernieleo In reply to BYSRSCKI [2007-01-27 14:13:13 +0000 UTC]

You are correct, it is a ruby throated hummingbird, females will also guard the feeder and even chase off their offspring

Err...Ruby Throats don't have red heads, that's an Anna's. You live in California anyway, Rubys don't range nearly that far west.

Beautiful capture. Very clear and crisp. All my attempted shots turn out blurry. It's so hard to catch one being still. Maybe being fat slowed him down enough.

Thank you very much, I have several shot of them being still, for me capturing them moving is the hard part

Wodewose [2007-01-19 09:36:17 +0000 UTC]

Glorious detail, Ernie. Is he really fat or just puffing out his feathers? Presumably not against the cold anyway

ernieleo In reply to Wodewose [2007-01-19 14:34:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Aidan, he's been looking this way for a couple of days, and we had temps below 30F (1C)degrees for 4 days this week, very cold for around here

Wodewose In reply to ernieleo [2007-01-19 14:40:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh, wow - that's a good bit colder than it's been here, where it's been a most unseasonably mild winter. It must have felt bitter to a hummer!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ernieleo In reply to Wodewose [2007-01-19 14:57:02 +0000 UTC]

We have had mild weather, with very little rain, just this one cold spell so far, as for the hummer, maybe thats why he sit in this bush so much, right out in the sun.

what he's really doing is guarding the feeder and I don't think I bother him at all, one time I tried to see how close I could get....3'....but of course the lens will not focus at that distance
