I'll venture a wild guess and say his life-changing story has something to do with that scar...
I like the way Radulf and Bane are approaching Speardrake here, Bane even helping her put her armor on, it gives a sense of budding camaraderie between them. It's kind of "breaking the ice".
And Bane being the perfect shoulder devil...why should anything have a reasonable explanation when there's a perfectly good paranoid reason to help you go crazy? Ahaha!
