Description
The SNECMA Coléoptère was a VTO aircraft developed by the French in the 1950s. It was a single-person aircraft with an annular wing designed to land vertically, therefore requiring no runway and very little space to take-off. There were several prototypes developed and tested, however the design proved to be very unstable and flying it was dangerous.BLENDER 3D model.

Funny, I saw this and thought it was a render of the Phoenix ship from Titan AE. I'm guessing the filmmakers based that ship on designs of the actual aircraft. It's a pretty nifty-looking design.

In this age of fly-by-wire and advanced avionics it probably would be possible to make such a design pratical.

I've heard of this plane. The US developed a couple of planes like this in the 1950's. They were hard to fly, too.
